Are you a passionate and resilient teacher who wants to use your skills to make a genuine difference to young people's lives?
We're looking for a Functional Skills & Personal Development Tutor to join our education team at HMYOI Werrington, delivering engaging and personalised learning to young people aged 15–18.
You'll work with learners with a wide range of abilities and significant SEND needs, delivering English, Maths, Personal Development and Citizenship from Entry Level through to Level 2. With small groups of no more than six learners, you'll have the opportunity to really get to know your learners, understand their individual needs and see the difference you can make.
What you'll be doing
You'll plan and deliver engaging, differentiated sessions that help learners develop their literacy, numeracy, confidence and wider personal skills. You'll:

Deliver Functional Skills English and Maths, alongside Personal Development and Citizenship.

Plan learning around individual learner needs and starting points.

Complete initial and baseline assessments and develop individual learning plans.

Monitor, assess and record learner progress.

Deliver both accredited and non-accredited learning, including AQA Unit Awards where appropriate.

Support learners to achieve meaningful outcomes and qualifications.

Create a positive, inclusive learning environment with clear boundaries.

Adapt your approach to engage learners who may have had challenging or negative experiences of education.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone who is patient, adaptable, resilient and genuinely passionate about helping young people succeed.
You'll ideally have:

A recognised teaching qualification such as AET or equivalent, or be willing to achieve this within six months.

Experience delivering Functional Skills English and Maths, ideally up to Level 2.

Experience working with young people aged 15–18.

Experience supporting learners with SEND or additional learning needs.

Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.

The ability to differentiate learning from Entry Level through to Level 2.

Excellent communication, organisation and record-keeping skills.

The ability to build positive and professional relationships with young people.
-
Relevant experience in alternative provision, PRUs, SEND, FE, youth offending, secure settings or prison education would be highly desirable.
