Are you an early-career scientist with strong wet-lab skills who wants to help develop the next generation of cancer immunotherapies? Join the Ishihara Lab in the Department of Bioengineering as a Research Assistant, on a project funded by Target Ovarian Cancer and the Little Princess Trust.
You will provide hands-on support across protein engineering, mammalian cell culture and immunological characterisation, working closely with Dr Jun Ishihara to drive the lab’s experiments forward. The role is predominantly bench-based, working in the laboratory rather than online.
You will support a research programme developing new cancer immunotherapies, taking the lead on day-to-day experimental work. In particular, you will produce and characterise recombinant proteins, maintain mammalian and bacterial cell cultures, carry out gene cloning, and run flow cytometry experiments. You will collect, analyse and record data carefully, helping to ensure the validity, reliability and reproducibility of the lab’s findings, and keep the laboratory organised and well-maintained. Beyond the bench, you will contribute to reports for the funders (Target Ovarian Cancer and the Little Princess Trust), present findings to colleagues, support publications, advise other staff and students, and attend relevant meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and abroad.
We are looking for someone with:
A first degree or master’s (or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as bioengineering, biochemistry, immunology or molecular biology, with hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture, protein production and purification, gene cloning, bacterial culture and flow cytometry. Knowledge of immunology and protein science, previous experience in a research laboratory, and a meticulous, well-organised, collaborative approach to experimental work. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to manage your own work to deadlines with minimal supervision, and a willingness to travel within the UK and abroad for research and conferences.

The Ishihara Lab, in the Department of Bioengineering at the White City Campus, develops protein engineering and immunoengineering approaches to improve cancer immunotherapies. You will join a 20-people size, focused team working closely together at the bench.
This is a full-time post (35 hours per week).
This role is for a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
