Surbiton Hockey Club is one of the UK’s leading hockey clubs, established in 1874 and proud to be the second oldest hockey club in the world. With 1,000+ members aged 6–70 and a busy programme of matches, training, junior sessions, tournaments and events, our clubhouse and bar are at the heart of the Surbiton HC community.
We’re looking for a full-time Bar & Catering Manager to lead day-to-day bar operations, deliver a great member and guest experience, and help us grow the bar’s contribution to club life.
The role
You’ll be responsible for running the bar and front-of-house service across training nights, match days, tournaments and club events. This is a hands-on role that combines service leadership, stock and compliance management, and team coordination.
Key responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day bar operations, ensuring consistently friendly, efficient service
- Manage and motivate bar staff (recruitment, rotas, training, performance and standards)
- Oversee stock control, ordering, cellar management and supplier relationships
- Drive bar sales and margin through smart product range, pricing and promotions
- Ensure licensing compliance, health & safety, food hygieneand safeguarding standards
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, presentation and customer experience
- Work closely with club leadership and volunteers to support match days, tournaments and social events
- Handle cashing up, basic reporting, and operational admin
- Support planning and delivery of events that increase clubhouse footfall and member engagement
- Carry out monthly stock checks to ensure that stock is accurate
What we’re looking for
- Proven experience managing a bar or hospitality venue (sports club experience a plus)
- Strong people management skills: confident leading a team and setting standards
- Solid knowledge of licensing, compliance, and best practice in bar operations
- Commercial mindset: understands margin, stock control, and how to grow revenue
- Calm under pressure on busy match days and event weekends
- Great communicator who enjoys being part of a community environment
- Flexible availability to work evenings and weekends (peak times in sport)
- Ambitious with a growth mindset. This is a role that could grow in size/scope due to the potential to hold external events.
- Experience with EPOS till systems
- A person who is reliable and has ultimate integrity
- Ideally someone who is local for convenience
