Head Greenkeeper
Reports to: Director of Golf, General Manager and Director Direct reports: Greenkeeping team
Role purpose:
The Head Greenkeeper is responsible for the leadership and day-to-day management of the club’s 2 x 18 hole golf courses, practice facilities, and landscaped areas. The role ensures the delivery of consistently high-quality playing surfaces and course aesthetics, balancing agronomic best practice with member expectations, sustainability, and budget control. By leading and developing the greenkeeping team, the Head Greenkeeper plays a key role in delivering an outstanding golfing experience for members and guests.
Key responsibilities:
Course Maintenance & Presentation
- Plan and oversee all daily maintenance activities across 36 holes, practice facilities, and the wider estate, ensuring courses are presented to the highest possible standard.
- Set and monitor daily priorities, responding to weather conditions, events, and member feedback.
- Implement seasonal and tournament preparation plans, ensuring the course meets expectations for competitions and special events.
- Maintain attention to detail across all areas, including bunkers, tees, greens, fairways, and roughs, ensuring a consistent and professional finish.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, motivate, and develop the greenkeeping team through effective training, mentoring, and structured performance management.
- Build a positive team culture that promotes pride, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Identify and support the professional development of staff through relevant qualifications, workshops, and industry events.
Irrigation & Agronomy
- Manage the Rainbird irrigation system, ensuring efficient use of water and optimum turf health throughout the year. Control of Winter extraction for reservoir.
- Plan and implement fertiliser, pesticide, and agronomic programs, working with external specialists where appropriate.
- Embrace sustainable and environmentally responsible practices in line with industry standards and regulations.
- Monitor and record course data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
Machinery & Asset Management
- Oversee the management and maintenance of the machinery fleet with our in house mechanic, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation.
- Schedule regular servicing and repairs in collaboration with the workshop/mechanics.
- Ensure all team members are trained and competent in machinery use and safety protocols.
Projects & Improvements
- Deliver long-term course improvement works and renovation projects as outlined in the annual maintenance and development plan.
- Contribute ideas and proposals for enhancing playability, sustainability, and aesthetics.
- Coordinate with contractors and external specialists where required.
Communication & Collaboration
- Conduct regular course walks with the Director of Golf to assess conditions, set short-term priorities, and review long-term objectives.
- Work closely with the Director of Golf and wider team to align maintenance priorities with the club’s overall golf operations strategy.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure high standards of health & safety compliance, including risk assessments, COSHH, and staff training.
- Promote a safe working environment and ensure all equipment and chemical handling is carried out correctly.
- Maintain accurate records of compliance, inspections, and audits.
Financial Management
- Prepare, monitor, and work within the approved course maintenance budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
- Track expenditure and variances, reporting to the Director of Golf as required.
- Seek cost-effective solutions without compromising quality, sustainability, or safety.
Pay: £30,160.00-£37,000.00 per year
