UHP are offering a unique opportunity to undertake a PhD within an NIHR funded programme of research to evaluate a novel mechanical ventilator for use in operating theatres and intensive care units in the NHS. The research programme is based at UHP and involves collaboration with three NIHR Biomedical Research Centres (Birmingham, Southampton, and University College Hospitals London).
We are seeking a resident doctor in an anaesthetic and / or intensive care medicine training programme to be a part of our team for three years and be supervised through a PhD at the University of Plymouth, with research based around the ventilator programme.

The postholder will undertake a distinct package of clinical research embedded within a major NIHR-funded research programme evaluating a novel mechanical ventilator within perioperative and intensive care settings. Their research will form the basis of a funded PhD at the university of Plymouth, supervised by investigators from the main programme of research. The role is intended for a resident doctor enrolled in, or eligible for, a recognised UK training programme in anaesthesia and / or intensive care medicine. They must be willing to undertake a PhD and develop the necessary skills to become a future clinical academic leader.
The postholder will undertake doctoral training leading to the award of a PhD while maintaining appropriate clinical competencies and engagement according to their specialty training requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES / EXPECTATIONS
Research responsibilities:
- Develop and complete their own research project within the main ventilator programme.
- Register for a higher degree (PhD) at the university of Plymouth (oversees fees cannot be covered by this fellowship).
- Attend relevant doctoral training courses and research methods teaching.
- Develop skills and knowledge related to medical device evaluation studies, relevant statistics and data analysis, implementation science, and human factors.
- Complete the agreed research within the three year timeframe.
- Complete and submit a PhD thesis by the end of the fellowship.
- Contribute to the planning, setup and delivery of the wider programme of research by supporting the conduct of a first-in-human clinical investigation of a novel mechanical ventilator.
- Develop skills in scientific writing and research dissemination.
- Prepare abstracts, conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications for the dissemination of their work.
- Work with the programme’s industry partner to gain knowledge and experience in medical device design and development within the NHS.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary research meetings and collaborative partnerships with academic, clinical and industry partners.
- Engage with patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) activities related to the research.
Clinical responsibilities:
- Maintain clinical skills appropriate to their stage of specialty training.
- Contribute to clinical duties within anaesthesia and / or intensive care medicine, as agreed by departmental leads.
- Maintain GMC registration and fulfil requirements for revalidation.
- Participate in appraisal, educational review and ARCP processes where applicable.
- Practice in accordance with GMC Good Medical Practice.
- Maintain local mandatory training requirements.
Expectations:

- Postholder should decline to undertake duties for which they not been trained, or for which they do not believe they will be able to undertake safely.
- The post-holder should ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard and in accordance with the current quality initiatives within the area of work.
- All staff who have access to or transfer data are responsible for that data and must respect confidentiality and comply with the requirement of the Data Protection Act 1998, in line with the Trust’s policies. Such information should not be released without the consent of the patient, client, staff member concerned unless required by a court order.
- The post-holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trust’s activities.
- The post-holder will be required to comply with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in line with Trust Policy.
- The post-holder is required to comply with Trust policy on the implementation of Working Time Regulations (1998, 2009 amendment) including declaration of hours worked and breaks taken by undertaking monitoring exercises when required and reporting any instances where the pattern of working hours may constitute a health and safety risk to the post-holder, patients, public and other Trust employees. The post-holder will not be subjected to any unlawful detriment by reporting any concerns under the Regulations.
- The postholder must have an appropriate Contract of Employment incorporating national terms and conditions (in accordance with national and local collective agreements).
- The postholder must have an agreed job plan that may be changed by mutual agreement between the doctor and the Service Line in accordance with the procedure for the agreement for the review of job plans and any recommendations following appraisal.
- The postholder should receive appropriate consultant supervision and mentoring.
- The post-holder must comply with all aspects of confidentiality, professional codes of conduct, UHP Staff Charter and the NHS Managers’ Code of Conduct.
