Following the planned retirement of the current role holder, who has successfully grown the corporate portfolio to c£200 m GWP of profitable business across Property, Liability and Motor, this is a rare opportunity to build on a strong foundation whilst shaping the future of NFU Mutual's Large Corporate Insurance proposition. As NFU Mutual looks to accelerate its commercial market growth through a clear 10-year plan, you’ll play a central role in shaping defining and delivering the underwriting strategy, portfolio performance and leadership capability needed to deliver this ambition. You’ll lead the continued evolution of a portfolio that is critical to NFU Mutual's long-term success, building on the progress already made while helping to shape the next phase of growth, performance and market presence.
Reporting to the Head of Underwriting this is a significant senior leadership opportunity to shape the future direction of NFU Mutual’s large corporate insurance portfolio. Leading a strategically important area of underwriting, you’ll take ownership of the underwriting strategy, technical standards and performance of a complex portfolio including Property, Liability and Motor Fleet risks for corporate customers with premiums over £100,000.
You’ll also have responsibility for a direct team of three managers, supporting the wider Large Corporate underwriting team of over 45 colleagues to deliver with clarity, accountability and impact, where the scale and complexity of risk demands high-quality judgement, detailed fact-finding and individual assessment. You’ll set clear expectations, develop leadership capability across the team, and create the conditions for strong contribution, continued development and high performance.
Operating in a highly judgement-led area of underwriting, where decisions are not simply automated or process-driven, you’ll set clear underwriting priorities, oversee forecasting and account performance, and use market, portfolio and trading insight to recommend changes to group policy, pricing controls, risk appetite and underwriting strategy.
Working closely with senior leaders and cross-functional partners, you’ll represent the underwriting position across NFU Mutual and in the corporate market.
The role offers genuine ownership and accountability for the portfolio of business and across the end-to-end client journey. You’ll help build long-term relationships with our distribution partners and clients, supporting strong trading outcomes, customer satisfaction and a high-performance underwriting culture across a varied portfolio of industries and risk types.
You are a credible and influential underwriting leader with the strategic mindset, commercial judgement and market presence to operate at senior level within a complex corporate insurance environment. You're confident translating business strategy and risk appetite into clear priorities and practical plans, while building strong relationships with senior stakeholders, brokers and clients.
As an engaging people leader, you'll be able to influence with confidence, lead through change and create an environment where collaboration, accountability and high performance thrive. You lead through change with clarity and confidence, bringing a proven track record of delivering underwriting and financial performance, driving operational improvement and leading organisational change
To join NFU Mutual, you'll also bring:
-
Substantial General Insurance underwriting and pricing experience from within commercial or corporate insurance trading environments.
-
Proven experience leading underwriting teams focused on large corporate customers, with a strong understanding of trading and client relationship management.
-
Strong technical underwriting expertise, with the ability to apply detailed fact-finding, individual risk assessment and sound underwriting judgement to complex corporate risks.
-
Experience developing underwriting plans, forecasting portfolio performance and recommending changes to strategy, policy or pricing to support financial, customer and commercial outcomes.
-
Strong knowledge of corporate market developments, industry issues, client needs, broker relationships, suppliers, professional bodies and regulatory frameworks.
-
The technical credibility to operate at a senior underwriting management level and represent the underwriting function confidently both internally and externally.
-
Experience of handling Property, Liability and Motor Fleet risks is not essential for this role but would be beneficial.
