teach195. is currently recruiting Teaching Assistants to support an SEMH provision in Failsworth. We are looking for experienced, resilient and supportive individuals who are confident working with children and young people who may present with social, emotional and mental health needs.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with experience in education, youth work, residential care, mentoring, behaviour support or similar settings. The role is particularly suited to individuals who are confident managing challenging behaviour and can build positive relationships with pupils who may have experienced barriers to learning.
The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff and the wider pastoral team to provide consistent support to pupils both inside and outside of the classroom.
You will help create a calm, structured and supportive environment, encouraging pupils to engage with their education and develop the skills needed to make positive progress.
The placement is available on a long-term basis, with the potential for the role to develop depending on the needs of the school and the successful candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Support students to engage positively with learning and classroom activities
- Build strong, trusting and professional relationships with pupils
- Manage challenging behaviour using consistent and appropriate strategies
- Support pupils with emotional regulation and social development
- Implement individual behaviour and learning plans as directed by teaching staff
- Encourage positive communication, resilience and independence
- Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes and other less structured parts of the school day
- Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and SEND professionals
- Monitor and report on pupil progress, behaviour and wellbeing
- Maintain clear professional boundaries and consistent expectations
- Uphold safeguarding and child protection procedures at all times
What We Are Looking For
- Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH or behavioural needs is desirable
- Experience within a school, alternative provision, youth work, care or mentoring environment would be advantageous
- Confident managing challenging or distressed behaviour
- Patient, calm and resilient approach
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to remain consistent and professional in difficult situations
- Understanding of the importance of boundaries, routines and clear expectations
- Reliable, adaptable and committed approach to supporting young people
- A genuine interest in helping pupils overcome barriers to education
