Emmaus Gloucestershire is a homelessness charity providing a home, support and meaningful work experience to people who have experienced homelessness. Through our social enterprise activities, we collect and sell donated furniture and household items, helping both our community and the environment.
We are seeking a reliable, organised and customer-focused Lead Van Driver to join our community team on a temporary basis to cover a period of sickness absence. This temporary role is to cover a full time position, 9-5 Mon-Fri (37.5 hours), and we are also open to considering part time cover of 9-5 Mon-Wed (22.5hours).
The Role
This is a hands-on role leading our collections and deliveries service. You will drive our 3.5-tonne vehicles and coordinate a van crew consisting of Emmaus companions and volunteers.
You will be the face of Emmaus Gloucestershire when visiting donors, customers and partner organisations, providing excellent customer service while supporting our charitable mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Driving 3.5T charity vehicles throughout Gloucestershire
- Leading and coordinating a van crew made up of companions and volunteers
- Collecting donated furniture, household goods and other items from supporters
- Delivering purchased items to customers premises
- Undertaking collection services
- Loading, unloading and safely securing goods
- Carrying out daily vehicle checks and reporting defects
- Completing delivery, collection and vehicle records.
- Undertaking waste and recycling runs, including trips to Javelin Park, Smiths and Wingmoor Farm
- Ensuring compliance with health and safety, manual handling and road traffic regulations
- Acting as a positive ambassador for Emmaus Gloucestershire
About You
You will be dependable, practical and comfortable working with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Essential
- Full UK driving licence
- Experience driving 3.5T vans or similar commercial vehicles
- Excellent customer service skills
- Good organisational and route-planning abilities
- Ability to undertake manual handling and furniture lifting
- Positive attitude and ability to work closely with volunteers and companions
- Good awareness of health and safety requirements
Desirable
- Experience in furniture delivery, removals, logistics, warehousing or charity retail
- Experience leading or coordinating small teams
- Knowledge of Gloucestershire and surrounding areas
- Understanding of the Emmaus movement and its values
Important Information
This position is offered on a temporary basis to provide cover for a current employee who is absent due to sickness. The contract will continue until the substantive postholder returns to work or the cover requirement otherwise ceases.

- Acceptance by the Charity's motor insurers
