A Research Associate post is available at Lancaster to work on the upgrade of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The post will focus on computing and software upgrade program of the Lancaster group, as well as delivering the usual support effort required for ATLAS authorship. Lancaster will be making important contributions to the new software frameworks and to the new software required to exploit the upgraded tracking detectors, as well as ensuring all code used is efficient on the changing computing architectures available. The post will also support the upgrade software for the high level triggers. Lancaster has a leading role in the computing and software area, as well as wide physics interests, including B physics, the decays of the Higgs to leptons and searches for SUSY and new physics using top quark identification. These physics interests will influence the benchmark studies to be performed to assess the performance of the upgraded system. Some level of physics analysis will also be permissible, especially for someone already engaged in ATLAS analysis, as a means of ensuring the close connection between the upgrade developments and the physics end-use.
Experience with OO/C++ and similar programming languages is required, and experience with the current ATLAS software, computing and particularly the tracking software would be particularly desirable. Experience with machine learning and concurrent programming will be particularly desirable. You should have a PhD in experimental High Energy Physics and have the potential to be a leader in the field. Experience with software, computing or triggers for the ATLAS experiment would be highly desirable, as would experience with deep learning and concurrent programming
The post will work in the first instance the High Energy Physics Group of the Physics Department, but will involve travel to local, national and occasional international meetings and workshops. It is anticipated to make an initial appointment of three years, with the expectation that the post will be extended. The post starts as soon as possible.
