About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our PPE Testing Laboratory in Manchester. Working within a leading independent testing and certification organisation, you will support the testing and evaluation of protective textile materials designed to safeguard against a range of workplace risks.
Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you will play a key role in conducting laboratory testing, maintaining quality standards, supporting accreditation requirements, and ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory equipment and processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and test textile specimens, including cutting, sewing, and sample preparation.
- Conduct physical, fire, and chemical testing on protective textiles and materials.
- Accurately record test results and maintain UKAS-compliant documentation.
- Assist with measurement calculations and uncertainty assessments.
- Maintain, calibrate, commission, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
- Support compliance with ISO 17025 quality management requirements.
- Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement activities.
- Assist with the evaluation and implementation of new testing equipment and methods.
- Provide technical support to the Laboratory Manager.
- Complete routine administrative tasks and laboratory housekeeping duties.
- Contribute to standards development activities and technical committees where required.
About You
- Educated to A-Level standard or above in Engineering, Textiles, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Experience working in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory is desirable.
- Knowledge of BS, EN, and ISO standards and their interpretation.
- Practical experience with laboratory instrumentation and testing equipment.
- Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A positive, team-focused approach with a willingness to learn and develop.
