Key Responsibilities
- Inspect vehicles to assess accident and collision damage.
- Identify visible and hidden damage and determine the repairs required.
- Prepare accurate repair estimates using industry-standard estimating systems.
- Calculate labour, parts, materials, and paint costs.
- Photograph and document vehicle damage for insurance and repair records.
- Liaise with insurance companies, customers, repair technicians, and parts suppliers.
- Ensure repair estimates comply with manufacturer and insurance company requirements.
- Monitor vehicles throughout the repair process and update estimates where additional damage is discovered.
- Ensure repairs are economically viable and meet required safety and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate records and provide clear reports on vehicle condition and repair costs.
- Keep up to date with vehicle technology, repair methods, manufacturer specifications, and industry regulations.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in vehicle body repair, estimating, or accident damage assessment.
- Strong knowledge of vehicle construction, bodywork, paint systems, and repair methods.
- Good understanding of insurance claims and repair procedures.
- Ability to use vehicle estimating software and relevant IT systems.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate numerical skills.
- Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple vehicles/claims.
- A relevant automotive qualification such as IMI or equivalent is advantageous.
- A driving licence is usually required.
Typical Working Environment
Vehicle Damage Assessors commonly work in vehicle body repair centres, accident repair centres, insurance companies, dealerships, or independent garages. The role can involve inspecting vehicles in workshops, communicating with customers and insurers, and spending time using computer-based estimating systems.
