A Senior Carer in domiciliary care supports people in their own homes while also providing leadership and oversight to care staff. A good job description should cover direct care, medication, staff supervision, care-plan compliance, safeguarding, quality monitoring and communication with the office.
Key duties usually include:
- Delivering high-quality, person-centred care in line with individual care plans and risk assessments.
- Supporting clients with personal care, mobility, continence, nutrition, hydration and daily living activities.
- Administering and recording medication safely in accordance with company medication procedures.
- Leading and supporting carers during shifts and acting as a point of contact for day-to-day concerns.
- Completing spot checks, observations and competency assessments when authorised by management.
- Supporting new carers through induction, shadowing and practical guidance.
- Monitoring care notes and medication records to ensure they are accurate, timely and complete.
- Reporting missed medication, medication errors, changes in a client’s condition and other concerns immediately.
- Identifying changes in clients’ needs and reporting these to the manager/coordinator so care plans and risk assessments can be reviewed.
- Responding appropriately to accidents, incidents, emergencies and safeguarding concerns.
- Liaising professionally with families, healthcare professionals, social workers and other professionals where required.
- Ensuring carers follow infection prevention and control, moving and handling, medication, confidentiality and health and safety procedures.
- Supporting the office with rota cover and providing care visits when required.
- Monitoring standards of care and escalating poor practice, lateness, missed calls or other performance concerns.
- Maintaining confidentiality and accurate records.
- Promoting clients’ dignity, independence, choice, privacy and rights.
- Participating in supervision, appraisal, training and team meetings.
- Working flexibly, including evenings, weekends and on-call duties where required.
Typical requirements include previous domiciliary care experience, good knowledge of safeguarding and medication procedures, strong communication and leadership skills, and preferably a Level 3 qualification in Adult Care or willingness to work towards one.
Pay: £13.80-£16.82 per hour
