Harrison Hinchliffe & Co is a growing, forward-thinking accountancy practice based in Glossop. We are looking for an experienced Practice Accountant to join our friendly and progressive team.
This role is suited to someone who already has hands-on experience working within an accountancy practice and is confident managing a varied workload across individuals, sole traders, subcontractors and limited companies.
We are a modern practice and make extensive use of digital accounting systems, cloud software and online HMRC services. We are therefore looking for someone who is comfortable with technology, organised in their approach and able to work confidently and independently.
The Role
You will work across a varied portfolio of clients and be responsible for preparing accounts, tax returns and VAT returns, as well as assisting clients with HMRC matters.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing Self Assessment Tax Returns for individuals, sole traders and landlords.
- Preparing accounts and tax returns for self-employed clients and partnerships.
- Preparing tax returns for construction industry subcontractors, including reconciling and claiming CIS tax suffered.
- Reviewing CIS deduction statements and ensuring CIS suffered is correctly reflected within clients’ tax affairs.
- Preparing and submitting VAT Returns.
- Dealing confidently with domestic VAT and Construction Industry VAT Reverse Charge transactions.
- Preparing limited company statutory accounts from client records and bookkeeping information.
- Preparing supporting year-end schedules and making appropriate accounting adjustments.
- Preparing Corporation Tax computations and CT600 returns.
- Reviewing bookkeeping records and identifying errors or adjustments required before accounts and returns are finalised.
- Liaising directly with clients to obtain information and resolve accounting and tax queries.
- Dealing with HMRC correspondence, queries and enquiries on behalf of clients.
- Assisting with HMRC compliance checks and providing supporting information and explanations where required.
- Managing deadlines across a portfolio and ensuring work is completed accurately and on time.
- Maintaining clear and comprehensive client records and working papers.
- Supporting the wider team and contributing to the continued development and improvement of the practice.
About You
Previous accountancy practice experience is essential for this position.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has solid experience working within a UK accountancy practice.
- Is confident preparing Self Assessment Tax Returns from start to finish.
- Has experience dealing with subcontractors and CIS tax suffered.
- Has practical experience preparing VAT Returns, including the VAT Domestic Reverse Charge for construction services.
- Can prepare limited company accounts and Corporation Tax Returns.
- Has experience corresponding with HMRC and dealing with HMRC queries or enquiries.
- Has a good understanding of UK accounting and taxation requirements.
- Is comfortable managing their own workload and working to multiple statutory deadlines.
- Has excellent attention to detail.
- Can communicate confidently and professionally with clients.
- Is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
- Is willing to ask questions when required but equally capable of using their own initiative.
- Takes ownership of their work and follows matters through to completion.
You may be AAT, ACCA or ACA qualified, part-qualified, or qualified by experience. For us, relevant practice experience and the ability to perform the role confidently are more important than a particular qualification.
Systems & Technology
We are a forward-thinking, digitally focused practice, so confidence using online accounting systems is essential.
Experience with the following is highly desirable:
- Sage
- Xero
- QuickBooks
- HMRC online services
- Cloud bookkeeping and accounting systems
- Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook
Experience using other accounts production, tax or practice management software would also be beneficial especially if it is Digita.
You should be comfortable learning new systems and using technology to improve efficiency rather than relying solely on traditional or paper-based processes.
What We’re Looking For
We want someone who will become a valued member of the team rather than simply process a list of jobs.
You should be:
- Approachable and personable.
- Reliable and organised.
- Commercially aware.
- Comfortable communicating directly with clients.
- Proactive rather than waiting to be prompted.
- Able to identify when something does not look right and investigate it.
- Open to new technology and new ways of working.
- Willing to share knowledge and support colleagues.
- Interested in developing alongside a growing practice.
