1. Job Purpose
The Team Leader supports the Registered Manager in delivering high-quality care to residents by supervising care staff, coordinating daily shifts, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and promoting a safe, caring, and person-centred environment.
2. Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Lead and supervise care staff during allocated shifts.
- Allocate duties, manage breaks, and ensure adequate staffing levels.
- Provide guidance, support, coaching, and on-the-spot training.
- Act as senior person on duty in the absence of the Manager/Assistant Manager.
Care Delivery
- Ensure residents receive safe, effective, and person-centred care in line with their care plans.
- Support with care tasks where required, including personal care, mobility, nutrition, medication support (where trained), and wellbeing.
- Promote dignity, choice, independence, and privacy at all times.
- Monitor changes in residents’ health and wellbeing and report concerns promptly.
- Contact any necessary professionals such as GP’s, D/N’s, OT’s and ensure family/ NOK are kept informed.
Medication Management
- Administer, supervise, and audit medication in line with home policy (if qualified).
- Report medication errors or discrepancies immediately.
Record Keeping & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records including daily notes, MAR charts, fluid/food charts, incident reports, and care plans.
- Ensure all staff follow policies, procedures, and regulatory standards (CQC Fundamental Standards).
- Assist with audits and quality checks as directed by the Manager/ Assistant Manager.
Communication
- Act as a point of contact for residents, families, professionals, and staff.
- Participate in handovers, team meetings, and reviews.
- Escalate safeguarding concerns, clinical changes, and incidents appropriately.
Health & Safety
- Ensure the environment is safe, clean, and compliant with health and safety legislation.
- Conduct routine checks such as fire safety, infection control, and equipment monitoring.
- Lead or support emergency responses, including evacuations and first aid (if trained).
Team & Home Support
- Promote teamwork and a positive workplace culture.
- Support new staff through induction, shadowing, and competency observations as requested by the Manager/ Assistant Manager.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and development of the home.
3. Person Specification
Essential
- Experience in a care home or similar setting.
- Strong leadership ability and communication skills.
- NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health & Social Care.
- Medication trained (or willingness to undertake).
- Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure.
- Compassionate, reliable, and committed to high-quality care.
Desirable
- Experience supervising staff.
- Knowledge of CQC requirements and care planning.
- First Aid training.
