Job Overview
This is a hands-on management position with responsibility for the whole workshop operation, and focusing on business development.
You will lead and manage our team of four technicians, working closely with our experienced Service Advisor to ensure the workshop runs efficiently, customers receive an excellent experience and the business continues to grow.
We are looking for someone who can bring strong leadership, organisation and commercial awareness to the role, while being comfortable getting involved in the day-to-day running of the garage.
Your role
- Plan and control incoming workshop work to ensure jobs are allocated efficiently and completed on time.
- Assign technicians to tasks, balancing skill set, workload and productivity requirements.
- Liaise closely with the other Service Advisor, to support a smooth customer journey.
- Monitor vehicle progress through the workshop and help ensure customers are kept informed of any changes or delays.
- Drive technician performance, productivity and quality standards in line with business objectives.
- Support, coach and develop technicians to help them achieve their daily objectives.
- Ensure repair documentation, job cards and vehicle health checks are completed accurately.
- Maintain manufacturer warranty standards, workshop processes and Health & Safety requirements at all times.
- Keep senior management regularly informed of workshop performance, progress and any issues requiring attention.
Experience
- Proven experience in managing workshop or maintenance operations in a technical or industrial setting is a must, especially candidates with previous VGM motasoft experience.
- Strong mechanical knowledge with hands-on experience using hand tools and power tools
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in workshop environments
- Prior experience with inventory management and procurement is preferred
Key responsibilities
Workshop operations
- Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the workshop.
- Manage bookings, workflow and technician capacity across four ramps.
- Plan and allocate work effectively to maximise workshop productivity.
- Ensure jobs are completed efficiently, correctly and on time.
- Monitor technician productivity, efficiency and utilisation.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, cleanliness and presentation.
- Ensure equipment and workshop facilities are maintained to a high standard.
- Oversee MOT operations (class 4 & 7) and ensure appropriate standards and procedures are maintained.
Team leadership
- Lead, motivate and manage a team of four technicians.
- Set clear expectations and maintain high standards of performance.
- Monitor technician productivity and performance.
- Hold regular team meetings, one-to-ones and performance discussions.
- Identify training and development opportunities.
- Support recruitment as the business grows.
- Build a positive, professional and accountable workshop culture.
Customer service
- Work closely with the Service Advisor to ensure an excellent customer experience.
- Deal confidently and professionally with customer queries and complaints.
- Ensure customers are kept informed throughout the repair process.
- Maintain strong customer relationships and encourage repeat business.
- Protect and enhance the reputation of the garage.
Commercial performance
- Take responsibility for the workshop's financial and commercial performance.
- Monitor labour sales, parts sales, margins and gross profit.
- Monitor workshop productivity and utilisation.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability and efficiency.
- Monitor average repair values and additional work opportunities.
- Work with the team to maximise productive workshop hours.
- Use management information and KPIs to identify areas for improvement.
- Develop and implement strategies to grow the business.
Additional work
- Ensure VHCs are completed consistently and to a high standard, and monitor conversion rates.
- Ensure genuine vehicle issues are clearly communicated to customers.
- Encourage appropriate additional work and future maintenance opportunities without compromising customer trust.
- Use Motasoft/VGM reporting to monitor workshop performance and identify opportunities.
Standards & compliance
- Maintain high standards of health & safety throughout the workshop.
- Ensure work is carried out in accordance with relevant legislation and industry standards.
- Manage quality control, comebacks and warranty issues.
- Ensure MOT, servicing and repair procedures are followed correctly.
- Maintain accurate workshop records and documentation.
