Maintenance Person Job Overview
Hyde Lea Care Home is looking to recruit a reliable, practical, and hardworking Maintenance Person to join our team. This role is responsible for ensuring our 19-bed residential dementia care home remains safe, well-maintained, and comfortable for our residents, visitors, and staff.
The successful candidate will carry out day-to-day repairs, planned maintenance, health and safety checks, and general upkeep of the building and grounds. You will work closely with the Home Manager to ensure the home remains compliant with relevant regulations and provides a welcoming environment for those living with dementia.
Main Responsibilities
- Carry out general maintenance and repairs throughout the care home.
- Complete routine inspections of the building, bedrooms, communal areas, equipment, and external grounds.
- Undertake basic plumbing, joinery, decorating, painting, tiling, and minor electrical repairs within your level of competence.
- Replace light bulbs, repair fixtures and fittings, hang shelves, assemble furniture, and carry out minor building repairs.
- Ensure all maintenance issues are completed promptly and to a high standard.
- Maintain the gardens, pathways, fencing, gates, car park, and outdoor areas to ensure they remain clean, tidy, and safe.
- Carry out regular health and safety checks, including fire safety equipment, emergency lighting, water temperature monitoring, and environmental inspections.
- Record all maintenance work, inspections, servicing, and repairs accurately.
- Liaise with external contractors and oversee their work whilst on site, ensuring work is completed safely and with minimal disruption to residents.
- Report any significant repairs or health and safety concerns to the Home Manager immediately.
- Assist in preparing bedrooms and communal areas for new admissions or refurbishment work.
- Ensure all tools, equipment, and maintenance materials are stored safely and securely.
- Support the home's infection prevention and control procedures by maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
- Always work in accordance with Health and Safety legislation, COSHH regulations, fire safety procedures, and Hyde Lea Care Home policies.
- Be available to respond to urgent maintenance issues where reasonably required.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Previous experience in a general maintenance, handyman, caretaker, or facilities role.
- Good practical skills covering basic plumbing, joinery, decorating, and general repairs.
- Ability to carry out routine maintenance safely and efficiently.
- Good understanding of Health and Safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and manage your workload effectively.
- Friendly, approachable, and respectful when working around vulnerable adults.
- Good communication skills.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and flexible.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within a care home, healthcare, school, or similar environment.
- Knowledge of fire safety checks and emergency lighting testing.
- Understanding of Legionella water monitoring.
- Basic electrical knowledge.
- Basic DIY qualifications or trade experience.
