British Sign Language (BSL) 1:1 Support Practitioner – Early Years
Salary: Starting salary £13945
Contract Type: Fixed term until August 2027
About the Role
We are seeking a caring, enthusiastic, and skilled British Sign Language (BSL) 1:1 Support Practitioner to provide dedicated support for a child within our Early Years setting. The successful candidate will work closely with the child, staff team, SENCO, and family to ensure the child can fully access learning opportunities in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to a child’s communication, confidence, and overall development during their early years journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consistent 1:1 support for a child using British Sign Language within the Early Years environment.
- Facilitate communication between the child, peers, and staff using BSL and other appropriate communication strategies.
- Support the child’s learning and development across all areas of the EYFS curriculum.
- Promote inclusion, independence, and positive social interactions.
- Work collaboratively with the class team, SENCO, external professionals, and parents/carers.
- Observe, assess, and contribute to records of the child’s progress in line with EYFS requirements.
- Adapt activities and learning opportunities to meet the child’s individual needs and interests.
- Ensure safeguarding, welfare, and health and safety procedures are followed at all times.
- Help create an enabling environment that supports communication and emotional wellbeing.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- BSL qualification (minimum Level 1 essential; Level 2 desirable).
- Experience working with children in an Early Years setting.
- Knowledge and understanding of the EYFS statutory framework.
- Understanding of inclusive practice and supporting children with additional needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A patient, nurturing, and flexible approach.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
