Job Purpose:
The Deputy Head of MIS will lead on both business intelligence and data quality within the college’s MIS function, ensuring data is accurate, accessible, and strategically leveraged to inform decision-making, maintain compliance, and support continuous improvement.
This role provides expert technical leadership across data reporting, analysis, system development, and validation processes.
The post-holder will act as deputy in the absence of the Head of MIS, representing the department internally and externally, and overseeing the operational delivery of the wider MIS team.

1. Strategic Leadership and Deputy Duties
- Act as deputy for the Head of MIS during periods of absence, maintaining oversight of all MIS functions and ensuring continuity of service.
- Where necessary, represent the MIS team at senior management meetings and external events, articulating data insights and updates effectively.
- Contribute to the strategic development of MIS systems, policies, and processes.
2. Business Intelligence Development and Analysis
- Lead the design, development, and ongoing improvement of BI systems and dashboards to provide timely, accurate, and actionable insights.
- Manage the implementation and optimisation of BI tools and platforms, ensuring they meet user needs across departments.
- Analyse complex data sets to identify trends, inform resource planning, and support institutional effectiveness.
- Produce and present regular and ad hoc reports to senior leaders, covering areas such as learner progress, funding, and operational performance.
3. Systems Management and Support
- Lead on MIS software management, schedule updates and patches, monitor and escalate user errors and issues.
- Provide training and support to users of MIS software.
- Collaborate with IT and other stakeholders to ensure data integrity, consistency, and security across integrated systems.
- Lead on integrations with third party tools and systems.
4. Data Quality and Compliance
- Lead the development and implementation of robust data quality assurance processes across all MIS activities.
- Oversee data validation and monitoring, with a focus on accuracy, coherency, and completeness, to ensure compliance with internal and external standards.
- Identify trends in data quality issues and implement corrective actions to improve data reliability and prevent recurrence.
- Collaborate with the Funding Compliance Manager to ensure alignment between funding claims and recorded data.
5. Team Management and Capacity Building
- Line manage and support MIS staff responsible for operational services, ensuring clear objectives, effective workflows, and professional development.
- Provide training, coaching, and technical guidance on the use of MIS systems, data interpretation, and quality standards.
- Promote a culture of data literacy across the college through tailored workshops and resources for staff at all levels.
6. Stakeholder Collaboration and Project Leadership
- Act as a key liaison for data-related queries from across the college, providing expert guidance and responsive support.
- Lead and participate in cross-college initiatives to improve data systems, processes, and outcomes.
- Ensure BI and data quality developments are coordinated and aligned with broader college strategies and regulatory frameworks.
- Work collaboratively with curriculum and support areas to understand evolving data needs and deliver solutions that enhance teaching, learning, and student support.

Degree level qualification or equivalent professional qualification in relevant field (e.g. Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, IT)
- Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of Management Information Systems and data management principles
- Proven experience in business intelligence development, dashboard creation, and data visualisation tools
- Experience of working with quality assurance, validation processes, and compliance frameworks
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with ability to present complex data insights to diverse audiences
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Leadership skills with ability to motivate, coach and develop team members
- Ability to think strategically while managing operational delivery, balancing multiple priorities effectively
- Strong project management skills with ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and deliver to deadlines
