Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Part-Time Precision Engineer & Tooling Mentor
In this role, you will combine technical expertise with mentoring skills to support precision engineering projects and tooling development.
We are expanding our technical capability and are looking for a skilled Precision Engineer / Toolmaker on a part-time basis. In this role, you will manufacture high-quality precision tooling for leathercraft and serve as a mentor, training our internal team on core engineering principles and machining practices.
Duties
- Tool & Die Making: Design, manufacture, and maintain precision tooling, clicker dies, custom brass embossing stamps, edge-creasing tools, punch tools, and specialized jigs/fixtures.
- Machining: Set up and operate manual and/or CNC machinery (milling machines, lathes, grinders, or pantographs) to achieve tight tolerances.
- Team Training & Mentorship: Teach and train our team on basic metalwork, manual machining operations, tool maintenance, and safe machine setup.
- Quality & Prototyping: Work alongside our design team to convert leather design concepts into functional hardware and tooling fixtures.
- Maintenance & Setup: Advise on the best tooling machinery, tooling storage, and metalworking processes for our workshop.
- Communicate effectively with team members across departments using clear, professional language in English
Experience
- Engineering Background: Time-served Precision Engineer, Toolmaker, or Machinist with a strong background in precision metalwork.
- Teaching / Mentoring Aptitude: Patient, clear communicator who enjoys sharing knowledge and upskilling others.
- Versatile Machining Skills: Hands-on experience with manual milling, lathes, surface grinding, or CNC equipment.
- Detail-Oriented: A passion for fine details, high-grade finishes, and tight tolerances.
- Note: Prior experience specific to leathercraft tools is a bonus, but strong general toolmaking and machining expertise is the primary requirement.
Flexible Schedule: Flexible part-time hours tailored to suit your schedule (ideal for semi-retired engineers or consultants).
Pay will be dependant experience.
