Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Personal Tax Assistant with prior accountancy practice experience to join our growing tax team. In this role, you will manage a varied portfolio of personal tax clients, handle tax computations, assist with Making Tax Digital requirements, and work closely with our Tax Manager to provide high-quality tax compliance and advisory support.
Responsibilities
- Manage a varied client portfolio of self-assessment taxpayers, including high-net-worth individuals, employed professionals, sole traders, unincorporated partnerships, and retired individuals with pension and investment income.
- Assist with MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment compliance and onboarding, including reviewing quarterly digital submissions, guiding clients on digital record-keeping requirements, and ensuring client software readiness.
- Prepare Capital Gains Tax (CGT) computations and returns, including meeting the 60-day reporting deadline for residential property disposals.
- Review eligibility for and assist clients with claims for relevant investment tax reliefs, including EIS, SEIS, VCT, as well as pension and charitable reliefs.
- Liaise with HMRC on routine compliance matters via telephone, e-mail and by letter
- Work closely with the firm's Tax Manager to resolve client queries and provide extra support to the wider team during peak deadlines.
- Maintain clear, prompt, and professional communication with clients to gather tax information, assist with digital software queries, and respond to day-to-day tax questions.
Qualifications (essential)
- Previous experience working within an accountancy practice in a personal tax or mixed tax capacity.
- Solid understanding of UK Personal Tax, Self-Assessment procedures, MTD ITSA regulations, Capital Gains Tax, and income tax schedules.
- Proficiency with standard tax and MTD-compliant software (e.g., IRIS, Sage, CCH, TaxCalc, Xero, or QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear client and HMRC interactions.
- Strong time-management skills with the ability to manage workload deadlines effectively during busy periods.
Qualifications (desirable)
- ATT (Association of Tax Technicians) qualified, part-qualified, or studying towards equivalent qualification.
The role is offered on a full-time basis, however part-time applicants will also be considered (salary pro-rata).
Pay: £27,500.00-£32,500.00 per year
