About you
We're looking for someone who:
- Has strong technical training in ballet, modern/jazz and tap
- Has substantial experience teaching all three genres
- Is familiar with the ISTD Modern Theatre and Tap syllabi
- Has experience preparing students for dance examinations
- Is familiar with RAD Ballet teaching, or is confident and willing to learn the relevant RAD syllabus
- Has experience teaching dance across a broad age range, from toddlers and preschoolers through to older children and teens
- Has a strong understanding of child development and dance pedagogy
- Can adapt explanations and teaching methods for different ages, abilities and learning styles
- Has excellent classroom management
- Plans purposeful, progressive and engaging lessons
- Is confident creating choreography and preparing students for performances
- Is highly organised, reliable and well prepared
- Takes a genuine interest in each student's development and progress
- Is proactive and comfortable taking ownership of their classes
- Can work independently while recognising that they are an important part of a wider school team
We would ideally like applicants to hold at least one recognised dance teaching qualification, such as an ISTD DDE or equivalent, or to be actively working towards a recognised teaching qualification.
Applicants should have high-level or vocational training across ballet, modern/jazz and tap and be confident teaching all three genres.
Immediate exam focus
Several of our students are currently working towards upcoming ISTD Modern and Tap examinations, including:
- Primary Modern
- Pre-Primary Tap
- Primary Tap
- Grade 1 Modern
- Grade 1 Tap
- Grade 2 Modern
Our students have recently completed their ballet examinations, so the immediate syllabus priority for the Autumn Term will be ISTD Modern and Tap.
Experience confidently preparing children for these or comparable examinations would therefore be particularly valuable.
What we provide
Curriculum guidance, music, props, equipment and example lesson structures are provided for our younger developmental programmes.
For RAD and ISTD syllabus classes, teachers are expected to have their own working knowledge and appropriate teaching resources for the syllabus they teach, although access to our online exam music and video resources can be provided where necessary.
You'll also have access to our class management system for attendance and class administration.
We want someone who feels confident taking responsibility for their classes and who already has the knowledge and experience to plan and deliver excellent teaching independently.
More than weekly classes
The role also includes:
- Planning and delivering your own lessons
- Maintaining accurate attendance records
- Completing a brief end-of-day communication report
- Completing annual student progress reports, with additional admin time paid
- Choreographing and rehearsing dances for performances
- Being available for our annual summer show, date to be confirmed
- Capturing occasional photos and short video clips from classes for the school's social media and marketing
- Communicating professionally and contributing positively to the wider teaching team
As the school grows, there is potential for additional weekday teaching, holiday camps, examination coaching, performances and an expanded teaching schedule.
For the right person, we'd love this to develop into a long-term role within Theative.
Practical details

If you're only available for the Autumn Term, we're still happy to hear from you, but please be upfront about this when applying.
