Histology Technician
Location: Newmarket
Salary: £28,000 – £30,000
Job Type: 6 month, fixed term contract
As a Histology Technician, you will play an important role in the processing of veterinary surgical biopsy submissions, supporting the delivery of high-quality diagnostic results for our customers. You will work across key areas of the histology workflow, including grossing, embedding, microtomy and staining, while ensuring work is completed accurately, efficiently and in line with established quality standards and SOPs.
This is a great opportunity for someone with experience in a diagnostic histology laboratory who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and wants to develop their technical skills within a collaborative team.
Responsibilities include:
Perform macroscopic examination and grossing of veterinary surgical biopsy submissions in accordance with local guidelines and SOPs.
Carry out high-quality embedding and microtomy to established benchmarks and SOPs.
Perform manual staining where required and operate automated staining equipment.
Prioritise workload effectively, ensuring urgent cases are progressed appropriately and pending work is monitored.
Calibrate equipment and carry out Quality Control checks, supporting daily, weekly and monthly maintenance activities.
Identify and report technical or QC issues promptly, supporting supervisors with problem solving and resolution.
Follow all applicable SOPs, safety requirements and quality procedures, maintaining a clean, organised and safe working environment.
Ensure laboratory supplies are maintained and restocked as required.
Cross-train across different areas of the department, developing knowledge and skills across multiple histology specialities.

Work Experience
Proven experience working in a diagnostic histology laboratory.
Practical experience with histology equipment, including microtomes, embedding stations and staining equipment.
A strong understanding of laboratory quality, safety and SOP requirements.
Experience working to established quality standards and benchmarks in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
A Bachelor's degree in a science-related subject is desirable but not essential.
Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing consistently high-quality work.
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider team.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Strong reasoning and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to escalate issues appropriately.
A positive and flexible approach, with a willingness to adapt to the changing demands of the laboratory.
Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office and accurate typing.
