Job Summary
To work flexible bank hours, covering shifts as required (10-hour shifts with a one-hour unpaid break), providing a high-quality catering service that supports the health, wellbeing and satisfaction of residents. To ensure meals are prepared to excellent standards while working within agreed budgets and care home policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support kitchen assistants or other catering staff as required, providing guidance and practical instruction in basic food preparation tasks.
- Prepare, cook and present nutritious daily meals that meet residents’ dietary needs and preferences, including catering for special occasions such as birthdays and themed events.
- Maintain the highest standards of food hygiene and safe food handling in accordance with current legislation.
- Monitor and record fridge and freezer temperatures to ensure safe food storage.
- Ensure all kitchen areas, equipment and appliances are cleaned regularly and maintained to a high standard of hygiene and safety.
- Follow safe systems of work at all times, including safe moving and handling practices, ensuring the safety of residents, visitors and colleagues.
- Comply with Health & Safety legislation, fire safety and evacuation procedures, and demonstrate working knowledge of COSHH relevant to the kitchen environment.
- Treat residents and visitors with dignity, respect and confidentiality at all times, promoting a caring and supportive environment.
- Work effectively as part of the wider care team, responding positively to colleagues and carrying out reasonable instructions promptly.
- Take responsibility for the proper use, cleanliness and reporting of faults in kitchen equipment.
- Ensure compliance with Food Safety and General Food Hygiene Regulations and all Home policies and procedures.
- Attend mandatory training sessions and staff meetings as required.

Person SpecificationKnowledge & Qualifications
- Basic Food Hygiene Certificate (essential).
- Willingness to work towards Intermediate or Advanced Food Hygiene qualification.
- Good understanding of food safety, hygiene standards and personal cleanliness.
Skills & Experience
- Ability to supervise and guide others in food preparation tasks.
- Efficient and organised, with the ability to manage a busy workload.
- Flexible and reliable, able to work bank shifts as required.
- Positive team player with good communication skills.
- Caring, patient and respectful approach towards elderly residents.
- Ability to use initiative and adapt to changing needs within the home.
Pay: £12.96 per hour
