Great restaurants are built by great people.
At No. Forty Nine, we're creating something that St John's Wood has been waiting for.
An all-day neighbourhood restaurant, bakery, wine bar and meeting place that feels effortlessly stylish without ever becoming pretentious. Incredible brunches, beautiful lunches, buzzing evenings, exceptional coffee, thoughtful wines and genuinely warm hospitality.
We're independent. We make decisions quickly. We care deeply about quality. And we're looking for an exceptional Assistant General Manager who wants to build something they're genuinely proud of.
This isn't just another position.
This is an opportunity to become one of the key leaders of a growing independent hospitality business.
The Opportunity
We're looking for someone who loves hospitality.
Someone who notices the tiny details guests never mention.
Someone who enjoys coaching people, improving standards and creating an atmosphere that guests want to return to again and again.
You'll work directly alongside the General Manager, leading the restaurant day-to-day, developing the team, driving commercial performance and helping shape the culture of No. Forty Nine.
You'll have genuine responsibility, real influence and the chance to make decisions that matter.
Most importantly, you'll be joining a business that wants to invest in your future.
If your ambition is to become a General Manager, we want to help you get there.
About You
You'll probably already be working as:
- Assistant General Manager
- Restaurant Manager
- Deputy Manager
within a quality restaurant, premium pub, members' club or boutique hospitality business.
You're someone who:
- Leads from the floor
- Loves developing people.
- Has exceptionally high standards.
- Understands that hospitality is about creating memorable experiences, not simply serving.
- Stays calm under pressure.
- Thinks commercially as well as operationally.
- Enjoys solving problems before they become problems.
- Takes ownership rather than waiting to be asked.
You care.
And people naturally want to follow you.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Every day is different, but you'll be involved in:
- Leading service across breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Coaching and inspiring the front-of-house team.
- Supporting recruitment and onboarding.
- Delivering exceptional guest experiences.
- Driving sales whilst protecting profitability.
- Maintaining outstanding standards across every part of the business.
- Stock control and ordering.
- Labour management.
- Training and development.
- Health & Safety and compliance.
- Working closely with the kitchen leadership team.
- Supporting the General Manager in all aspects of running the business.
When the General Manager isn't present, you'll confidently take ownership of the restaurant.
We're Looking For Someone Who Has
- Experience leading busy, premium hospitality operations.
- Excellent food and beverage knowledge.
- Strong wine knowledge (or a genuine interest in learning).
- Fantastic communication skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Confidence managing large teams.
- Passion for coaching others.
- A positive, solutions-focused attitude.
- The ability to remain calm during busy services.
- A genuine love of hospitality.
What You'll Get In Return
We know great people have choices.
So we want this to be somewhere you'll genuinely enjoy coming to work.
We offer:
- Competitive salary.
- Generous tronc.
- Career progression into General Management.
- Structured leadership development.
- Opportunities to help shape the future of the business.
- Staff meals on shift.
- Company discounts.
- A supportive senior leadership team.
- Continuous training and development.
- The chance to work in one of North London's most exciting independent restaurants.
Why No. Forty Nine?

We're trying to be the best neighbourhood restaurant in London.
That means creating a place guests love returning to.

If you're ambitious, passionate and ready for your next challenge, we'd love to hear from you.
