About Us
Our company is a new, large-scale independent grocery and fresh food retailer launching in London. We are committed to bringing our customers the finest quality products — from fresh produce and dairy to dry goods and specialty items — all under one roof. As we prepare for our exciting opening, we are looking for a talented and experienced Purchasing Manager to join our founding team and play a key role in shaping our product offering from day one.
The Role
As our Purchasing Manager, you will be at the heart of our operations. You will take full ownership of our buying strategy — from identifying the right suppliers and negotiating the best prices, to managing stock levels and ensuring our shelves are always well-stocked with the right products at the right time. This is a hands-on, high-impact role that requires both strategic thinking and day-to-day operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a purchasing strategy aligned with the store’s product range and customer expectations
- Source, evaluate and negotiate with suppliers across all product categories including fresh produce, dairy, meat, deli, dry goods, and non-food items
- Build and maintain strong supplier relationships to secure competitive pricing, favourable payment terms and reliable delivery schedules
- Monitor and manage stock levels across all categories to minimise waste, prevent out-of-stocks and maximise profitability
- Plan and manage purchasing schedules and order cycles to ensure consistent product availability
- Analyse sales data and market trends to make informed buying decisions and identify new product opportunities
- Work closely with the store management team to align purchasing with promotional plans and seasonal demand
- Ensure all products meet quality, food safety and compliance standards
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising on product quality
- Maintain accurate purchasing records, supplier contracts and pricing documentation
- Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a purchasing, buying or procurement role within the grocery, fresh food or retail sector
- Strong knowledge of product categories including fresh produce, chilled, ambient and non-food
- Proven experience managing supplier relationships and negotiating contracts
- Solid understanding of stock management systems and purchasing software
- Ability to analyse sales and stock data to drive buying decisions
- Knowledge of food safety regulations and quality standards
- Highly organised with excellent attention to detail
- Strong communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced retail environment
- Experience working in an independent or start-up retail environment is a plus
