Materials Buyer – Maternity Cover
Chichester | £40,000 Pro Rata | 3 Days Per Week
Potential for Full-Time Permanent Position
We are looking for a motivated and organised Materials Buyer to join our ever-growing team based in Chichester on a maternity cover basis. This role is initially for 3 days per week, with the potential to develop into a full-time permanent position for the right candidate.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a busy and expanding construction business, working closely with the Commercial Director and project teams across a variety of projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing prices for all materials included within project plans and drawings
- Carrying out take-offs from drawings and quantifying materials required
- Analysing quotations and tender returns from suppliers
- Working closely with project teams to ensure timely delivery of materials and contractors in line with project programmes
- Identifying potential suppliers and sourcing new products
- Contacting suppliers to obtain competitive quotations
- Negotiating favourable terms and delivery schedules with suppliers
- Maintaining accurate purchasing records and organised work schedules
- Assessing supplier reliability and performance
- Dealing effectively with supplier issues and material flow challenges
- Ensuring compliance with safety, health, and environmental requirements relating to materials and services
- Providing cost advice and support to estimators and the commercial team
- Reporting directly to the Commercial Director
Candidate Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience within a materials buying or procurement role in construction
- Ability to read construction drawings and carry out accurate take-offs
- Strong analytical and negotiation skills
- Good knowledge of construction materials and supply chains
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Competent IT skills, including Excel and procurement systems
