Location: Marie’s Tearoom & Emporium, Gravesend
Hours: Part-time – approximately 2 days per week, with additional hours potentially available
Age: 18+ for this position due to the possibility of opening/closing the premises and working independently for short periods.
We may also have a separate weekend opportunity suitable for applicants of any age.
About the Role
We are looking for a friendly, reliable and flexible Tea Room & Retail Assistant to join the team at Marie’s Tearoom & Emporium.
This is a varied customer-facing role covering the tearoom, counter, retail area and some basic kitchen duties.
You will usually work alongside another member of the team, but there may be short periods where you are responsible for opening or closing and operating the tearoom independently. You therefore need to be confident, dependable and able to use your initiative.
Main Responsibilities
- Welcoming customers and providing friendly customer service.
- Taking orders and operating the till.
- Preparing and serving hot and cold drinks.
- Serving food and cakes.
- Carrying out basic food preparation and kitchen duties.
- Supporting the kitchen during busier periods.
- Preparing simple menu items when required.
- Opening or closing the tearoom when scheduled.
- Following opening, closing and cleaning procedures.
- Keeping the tearoom, counter and customer areas clean and presentable.
- Clearing tables and washing up.
- Restocking drinks, food, packaging and retail products.
- Checking and rotating stock.
- Helping maintain displays within the Emporium/retail area.
- Assisting customers with retail purchases.
- Packing occasional online retail orders ready for collection or delivery.
- Helping receive and organise stock deliveries.
- Supporting afternoon teas, events and private bookings when required.
- Following food hygiene, allergen, health and safety and other company procedures.
Kitchen Support
Although this is primarily a front-of-house and customer-service role, you must be willing to carry out basic kitchen duties.
This could include preparing simple food, heating and plating menu items, preparing sandwiches or other straightforward dishes, and supporting the main kitchen member during busy periods.
Full training will be provided on our menu and procedures.
About You
We are looking for somebody who is:
- Friendly and comfortable talking to customers.
- Reliable and punctual.
- Confident enough to work independently for short periods.
- Comfortable handling money and using a till.
- Happy to work both front-of-house and in the kitchen.
- Able to stay organised when it becomes busy.
- Willing to clean, wash up and carry out all the practical parts of running a tearoom.
- Able to follow food hygiene and allergen procedures carefully.
- Comfortable working with retail stock as well as food and drink.
- Willing to learn our products, menu and services.
- Flexible and willing to support events or busier periods when required.
Previous hospitality, café, retail or customer-service experience would be useful, but attitude, reliability and willingness to learn are equally important.
Hours
This position is expected to be approximately two days per week.
There may also be opportunities for additional hours to cover holidays, sickness, events and seasonal demand.
Some weekend working may be required.
Because the role may occasionally involve opening or closing the premises and being the only team member on site for short periods, applicants for this particular position must be aged 18 or over.
Pay: £10.85-£12.71 per hour
Licence/Certification:
- Driving Licence (required)
Work Location: In person
