Job Purpose
The Night Porter is responsible for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the hotel throughout the night. This includes providing a friendly and professional service to guests, completing overnight reception duties, maintaining hotel security, carrying out cleaning and preparation tasks, and ensuring the hotel is ready for the following day.
The successful candidate will be reliable, responsible and able to work independently, while maintaining a high standard of customer service at all times.
Key ResponsibilitiesGuest Service & Reception
- Welcome and assist guests arriving during the night in a friendly and professional manner.
- Complete late check-ins and assist guests with any enquiries or requests.
- Handle guest queries, complaints and requests appropriately and escalate issues when necessary.
- Process payments and complete relevant reception and cash-handling procedures.
- Answer telephone calls and respond to guest enquiries.
- Assist guests with taxis, emergency situations and other reasonable requests.
- Carry out early-morning check-outs where required.
- Maintain a professional and welcoming presence throughout the night.
Night Audit & Administration
- Complete all required night reception procedures and end-of-day tasks.
- Check bookings, room rates, payments and transactions for accuracy.
- Reconcile cash, card payments and other financial transactions in accordance with hotel procedures.
- Complete night audit reports and any other required paperwork.
- Ensure all reception and administrative records are accurate and up to date.
- Prepare relevant information for the morning reception team.
Security & Safety
- Conduct regular checks of the hotel throughout the night.
- Ensure external doors and designated areas are secure.
- Monitor the hotel for any unusual activity, hazards or maintenance issues.
- Respond appropriately to alarms, emergencies and incidents.
- Follow all hotel fire, health & safety and emergency procedures.
- Report any incidents, accidents, maintenance issues or security concerns to management.
- Ensure only authorised guests and visitors have access to hotel areas during the night.
- Be familiar with the hotel's emergency procedures and evacuation arrangements.
Cleaning & Hotel Preparation
- Carry out light cleaning duties throughout the night, including public areas, reception and other designated areas.
- Keep reception and public areas clean, tidy and presentable.
- Clean and replenish toilets and other public facilities when required.
- Empty bins and remove rubbish in accordance with hotel procedures.
- Carry out any additional cleaning tasks required during quieter periods.
- Assist with setting up breakfast areas and preparing the hotel for the morning service.
- Ensure breakfast areas and relevant equipment are ready for the morning team.
General Duties
- Complete the hotel's night porter checklist accurately.
- Carry out regular property checks and report any defects or maintenance requirements.
- Assist other departments where reasonably required, particularly during quiet periods.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding guests, staff and hotel business.
- Follow all hotel policies, procedures and standards.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by management.

Working Conditions
- Primarily night-time working hours, including weekends and bank holidays as required.
- The role involves periods of working independently.
- The position may involve walking around the hotel regularly and carrying out light physical duties.
- Flexibility may be required depending on hotel occupancy, events and operational requirements.
