Job Overview
We are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Fitter to join our engineering team. Operating primarily from our Wolverhampton workshop, the successful candidate will play a critical role in the maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of rotating equipment and heavy industrial machinery. The core focus of this position will involve the meticulous stripping, inspection, and rebuilding of gearboxes, industrial pumps, and motors.
Key Responsibilities
- Equipment Overhaul: Dismantle, inspect, and rebuild a variety of industrial mechanical equipment, with a primary focus on gearboxes, centrifugal/positive displacement pumps, and electric motors.
- Detailed Inspection & Diagnostics: Conduct rigorous inspections of mechanical components to identify wear, damage, or operational faults. Measure and record tolerances to ensure parts meet original manufacturer specifications.
- Component Replacement: Safely remove and replace bearings, mechanical seals, gaskets, shafts, and other internal components.
- Precision Assembly: Reassemble machinery to strict engineering standards, ensuring correct alignment, tensioning, and balancing of all moving parts.
- Testing & Quality Control: Perform functional and pressure testing on completed assemblies prior to dispatch or reinstallation on site.
- Documentation: Complete detailed inspection reports, recording findings, parts required, and the work carried out to maintain accurate engineering records.
- Workshop Operations: Work collaboratively within the team, supporting John Soudy in managing the workshop operations to ensure a safe, efficient, and productive working environment.
- Health & Safety: Strictly adhere to all company health and safety protocols, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Time-served or fully qualified Mechanical Fitter/Engineer (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent).
- Demonstrable, hands-on experience stripping, inspecting, and rebuilding industrial gearboxes, pumps, and motors.
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills on mechanical systems.
- Proficiency in the use of precision measuring equipment (micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators).
- Ability to read and accurately interpret technical engineering drawings and schematics.
- A strong commitment to safety and high-quality workmanship.
- A full drivers licence.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with pipe fitting or basic fabrication/welding.
- Familiarity with site-based installation, maintenance, and pressure testing.
- Experience operating within a fast-paced bespoke steel fabrication or industrial service environment.
The ideal candidate would be also be suited for site based work within the sites of our large customer base generally situated around the Midlands.
