ShareAction is an independent charity and an expert on responsible investment. We work to build a world where the financial system serves our planet and its people. We set ambitious standards for how financial institutions, through their investment decisions, can protect our planet and its people and campaign for this approach to become the norm. We convene shareholders to collectively push companies to tackle climate crisis, protect nature, improve workers’ rights and shape healthier societies. In the UK and EU, we advocate for financial regulation that has society’s best interests at its core.
We are seeking an experienced campaigner that is confident to develop and lead campaign strategies that advance the objectives of ShareAction’s Energy Transition Programme to accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to a clean, affordable, and fair energy system by targeting the investment system as a key driver of change. This is a fixed term contract for a period of 12 months. Extensions to the contract are subject to future funding.
We’d love to hear from you if you have experience of building and implementing impactful climate or environmental campaigns, if you can bring fresh ideas and campaign tactics to maximise the impact of our work, and are a versatile and passionate change maker that can work at pace as part of a high performing team. Ideally, you’ll bring significant experience of campaign strategy development, communicating to a range of audiences, building constructive relationships with external and internal stakeholders, conducting ad hoc research as needed to support our campaigns and working with others to ensure the smooth running of our campaigns, internal alignment across programmes and to promote learning and improvement.
You’ll be leading on elements of our industrial decarbonisation work, challenging major global chemicals and industrial gases companies to decarbonise and pushing for higher standards for these industries, to help phase down fossil fuel usage and protect people and planet. Industrial decarbonisation will be the initial campaign focus of the role, but could change in the future depending on funding and future Programme focus. You will push investors to advocate for an enabling policy environment to deliver a Just Transition by engaging with policymakers and standard setters. You will also play a role in developing the ongoing strategy and campaigns of the Energy Transition programme.
While we hope we’ll find someone with the majority of these skills and experience we’re keen to hear from you, even if you don’t have them all. We appreciate lots of skills are transferable and we welcome opportunities to explore how we can harness your skills and experience in support of our strategic objectives. Please read through the job description to understand the person specification and ideal requirements.
We have a formal hybrid working policy in place. The Energy Transition Programme team meets in the office on a weekly basis on Tuesdays. As this role involves a lot of interaction with London-based colleagues and stakeholders, there is an expectation that you will be able to attend the office or meetings on average once a week.
We're really keen to hear from you if you're motivated by the chance to harness the investment system to accelerate climate action, and you're willing to challenge established norms and powerful institutions where it's needed to get there. You're versatile; comfortable leading a range of campaign activities across different workstreams, coordinating project teams, and working proactively and independently within agreed parameters.
Ideal candidates will bring a strong understanding of how to influence investors, businesses and policymakers on the climate crisis and wider environmental issues, along with proven experience of how different campaigning approaches drive change. And preferably, we're looking to hear from people who are not afraid to trial new tactics and bring the team along with you as you test new ideas.
Key skills for this role are juggling competing priorities and deadlines without losing sight of quality or detail; communicating with confidence, with an ability to tailor your message for different audiences to achieve campaign goals; and strong collaboration and team-playing.
It would also be great if you have knowledge of the energy transition, particularly industrial decarbonisation, and experience engaging with companies and/or investors on climate or environmental issues. Line management experience, a track record contributing to fundraising proposals and reports, research skills, and experience with Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning in a programme context would all be valuable additions, though not essential. ShareAction values and respects all differences in people (seen and unseen) and welcomes applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries. We are committed to having a team that is made up of diverse skills, experiences and abilities and we are working hard to provide an environment where all can bring their authentic selves to work. We know that some people won’t apply for a role unless they meet all the requirements listed in the job description. If this is the case for you, but you think you would excel in this role, we want to hear from you!
Our hiring process is anonymised, we won’t ask for a cover letter and we don’t look at CVs until the interview stage. We do this so that we reduce the opportunity for unconscious biases to affect our decision making and so we prioritise skills and expertise over how well you can write a CV.
We also actively encourage incoming staff to consider flexible working arrangements; recognising that a better work-life balance can improve employee motivation, performance and reduce stress. Please talk to us at the interview about the flexibility you need. We can’t promise to give you exactly what you want, but we do promise not to judge you for asking.
While we embrace hybrid working at ShareAction, we also think there is a lot of value in spending time together in person. We run all-staff away days, a yearly retreat and more regular team and directorate meet-ups so that we can develop our ideas and plans together. As part of the induction process, we’ll invite you to our office in Aldgate so you can meet and get to know your line manager, team and others from across the organisation.
To be considered for this post you must be legally eligible to work in the UK, unfortunately we are unable to provide visa sponsorship.
