A hands-on Mobile Multi-Skilled Operative is required with a strong focus on fire stopping and a willingness to support a wide range of site-based maintenance tasks. Maintenance operatives typically carry out varied repair and upkeep work across buildings, including painting, minor repairs and general maintenance, while fire stopping work is specifically aimed at helping prevent the spread of fire and smoke through openings and penetrations.
The successful candidate will be confident carrying out fire stopping works, painting and decorating, and general making-good tasks to help keep properties safe, compliant, tidy and in good condition. The role will suit someone practical, flexible and dependable who takes pride in high-quality work and is happy to turn their hand to whatever is needed on site.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out fire stopping works in line with job specifications, site requirements and safe working practices, helping to maintain compartmentation and reduce the spread of fire and smoke through service penetrations and gaps.
- Complete internal and external painting and decorating to a high standard, including surface preparation, finishing and making good.
- Assist with general building maintenance tasks, including basic carpentry, patch plastering, minor repairs and other multi-trade support duties as required.indeed
- Respond to day-to-day tasks across multiple sites, adapting to changing priorities and stepping into different duties where needed.
- Keep work areas clean, tidy and safe at all times, ensuring tools, materials and waste are managed correctly.
- Follow health and safety procedures, method statements and company policies at all times, using tools and equipment safely and correctly.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, clients and tenants where relevant to ensure work is completed efficiently and professionally.
- Record completed works in line with company procedures, including job sheets, photographs and basic reports where required.
- Identify defects, snagging items or additional remedial works and report them promptly to the appropriate manager.
- Support other planned and reactive maintenance activities in line with business needs.
Skills and experience
- Proven experience carrying out fire stopping works, with a good understanding of fire stopping materials, systems and installation methods. Fire stopping roles commonly require knowledge of appropriate materials, installation techniques, and the ability to identify openings around pipes, ducts and cables that need sealing correctly.
- Proven experience in painting and decorating, ideally within a maintenance, social housing, construction or property services environment.
- Basic skills in at least one other trade, for example carpentry, plastering, plumbing or general building repairs. Multi-skilled maintenance roles commonly involve a mix of these duties across occupied and non-occupied buildings.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, using initiative to solve problems and complete tasks to a good standard.
- Good attention to detail and pride in delivering neat, safe and high-quality work.
- Ability to read and follow job instructions, site requirements and, where needed, technical drawings or specifications relevant to fire stopping work.
- Good communication and record-keeping skills.
- Full UK driving licence, as travel between sites may be required. Driving is commonly listed as essential for mobile and field-based fire stopping roles.
- Relevant cards or qualifications such as CSCS, passive fire protection training, NVQ or equivalent would be advantageous; CSCS is often needed on construction sites and fire stopping employers commonly value recognised passive fire protection qualifications.
