STORY ELECTRICAL
EV Maintenance Engineer
£40,000 – £45,000 depending on experience · Full-time, permanent · Field-based, Peterborough and surrounding area · Company van supplied
We have recently secured a number of new maintenance contracts across our EV charging portfolio, and we are expanding the team to deliver them. This is a newly created, permanent position for an experienced engineer whose main line of work will be reactive EV callouts — getting faulty charge points back into service quickly and keeping our clients' networks live.
You will work a defined patch around Peterborough from home, in a fully equipped company van, with callouts handled within normal working hours. There is no out-of-hours standby rota, so you are home in the evenings.
The salary is banded at £40,000 to £45,000. Where you sit in that band depends on the depth of your EV fault-finding experience and the qualifications you already hold — we would rather pay properly for someone who can fix it first time.
The role
Reporting to the Contracts Manager, you will be the engineer our clients see when something stops working. Day to day you will:
- Attend reactive callouts on AC and DC charge points, diagnose the fault and complete a first-time fix wherever possible
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance visits, inspections and testing in line with contract schedules
- Fault-find across charge unit hardware, supply and distribution, earthing arrangements, RCD/RCBO protection and load management equipment
- Work with back-office and OCPP platforms to diagnose connectivity, authorisation and charging session faults
- Carry out firmware updates, component replacements and unit commissioning or re-commissioning as required
- Complete accurate job reports, test certification and asset records on a mobile device before leaving site
- Escalate parts, warranty and manufacturer issues promptly so that SLA response and rectification targets are met
- Work safely and to standard — BS 7671, the IET Code of Practice for EV charging equipment installation, and site-specific rules
- Represent Story Electrical professionally on client sites, from private homes to commercial car parks and depots
What you will need (essential)
- Demonstrable experience attending EV charge point callouts and reactive maintenance — this is the core of the role
- City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services (or equivalent) and a current ECS Gold Card
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (C&G 2382)
- EV charging equipment qualification — C&G 2921-1 / EVCS or equivalent
- Confident fault-finding ability on live commercial and domestic installations, working alone
- Full UK driving licence
- Strong customer manner and clear written reporting — you will often be the only Story Electrical person on site
Desirable
- Manufacturer training on charge point hardware — for example Zaptec, Alfen, Kempower, Wallbox, EO or ABB
- C&G 2391 inspection and testing
- DC rapid and ultra-rapid charger experience
- Working knowledge of OCPP and networked charge point management systems
- First Aid, IPAF, PASMA, SSSTS or CSCS cards
- Experience working to contracted SLAs in a facilities or service environment
What we offer
- £40,000 – £45,000 per annum, depending on your EV experience and qualifications
- Full-time, permanent contract
- Company van, fuel card, tools, test equipment, phone and tablet
- Full PPE and branded workwear
- Callouts within normal working hours — no out-of-hours standby rota
- Ongoing manufacturer and technical training, funded by us
- Regional patch, so you are home most nights
- Company pension and 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays
