About the Role
The Lecturer in Arabic Culture will deliver teaching across the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum. Reporting to the Head of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, the role holder will work closely with the staff on SOAS’s BA Arabic, BA Languages and Cultures, and MA Middle Eastern Studies. You will be teaching Arabic literature in translation and in Arabic as language use.
The role holder will also serve as an academic adviser to students studying Arabic, including those who are preparing for the study abroad, and will advise dissertations across a range of subjects related to Arabic literature such as Middle Eastern Studies and Comparative literature. You will advise undergraduate capstone projects and postgraduate dissertations.
This role requires teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, assessment experience in both essays and alternative forms of assessment (e.g. multimedia), and awareness of issues around AI in contemporary higher education.
You will be an adaptable, proactive, and creative team player who is able to support students and work collaboratively with colleagues.
About the Department
The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics is home to 700 students studying more than a dozen Asian, African and Middle Eastern language. Our Arabic team includes nearly a dozen teachers covering language acquisition, translation and subtitling, dialectology, literature, film, and media. The BA Arabic is one of the largest in the UK, with our students taking Arabic as a single degree or as part of a joint degree with Economics, History, International Relations, Linguistics, Music, or many other combinations. We also welcome postgraduate students taking an MA with Intensive language. Students on our programmes spend a significant time abroad studying Arabic intensively, and our finalists regularly win speech and poetry prizes in the languages they learn at SOAS.
