Active Learning Support Assistant – Pupil Referral Unit

We are currently looking for an Active Learning Support Assistant to join a secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Southampton from September. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people while supporting them in a positive, engaging, and nurturing environment.
The Role
As an Active Learning Support Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting students both inside and outside the classroom. You’ll help create positive learning experiences, encourage students to develop their confidence and interests, and provide practical and emotional support where needed.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting students with their academic, personal, and social development in a safe and supportive environment
- Helping to organise and deliver engaging educational activities, trips, and days out
- Encouraging students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build self-confidence
- Supporting a wide range of creative, practical, and interactive activities both in and outside the classroom
- Taking part in outdoor activities, sports, trips, and other enrichment opportunities
- Working closely with teachers and other members of staff to provide a consistent and holistic approach to each student’s development
- Promoting positive behaviour and helping students develop strong communication and social skills
- Providing encouragement, reassurance, and positive role modelling to students
About You
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Enthusiastic, patient, and caring, with a genuine passion for supporting young people
- Experienced in working with children or young people, ideally within an education, care, or support setting
- Energetic and creative, with a willingness to get involved in a variety of activities
- Comfortable taking part in trips, outdoor activities, sports, and practical learning
- Able to build positive and trusting relationships with young people
- Confident working independently while also being a strong team player
- Adaptable, resilient, and able to think on your feet
- Positive and consistent when supporting students with challenging behaviour or additional needs
- Previous experience working in a PRU, alternative provision, or similar setting would be advantageous, but is not essential
