The Limes Retirement Home is a privately-owned care home that offers a wide range of care needs, including dementia and palliative care.
Situated in the small village of Mellis close to the Norfolk Suffolk border. The Limes retirement home is an 18th century house that has been modernised throughout, including new extensions and outdoor cottages.
The home is surrounded by a lush green common and has a large well-maintained garden with flower beds, seating areas and animals such as chickens for the residents to enjoy.
The accommodation comprises of 26 single ensuite rooms which are all tastefully decorated to express a homely, warm, and welcoming feel.
Job description
We are currently offering a role for a part time cook to provide nutritious and balanced meals whilst working with residents and staff to ensure individual's dietary needs and preferences are met, with consideration of any ethnic and religious convictions.
To ensure that all health & safety and environmental health standards are maintained across all catering activities and premises at the home whilst adhering to the food standards agency rules and regulations.
Our cooks, regardless of shift play a central role in many aspects of the work at the home. At all times our key principles with emphasise on dignity, respect and each resident’s individuality as well as preserving as much as possible of their independence.
- Salary: Includes enhanced weekend and bank holiday rate
- Free food and free parking
- Week 1: Saturday & Sunday (9:00am–2:00pm)
- Week 2: Wednesday, Thursday & Friday (9:00am–2:00pm)
Responsibilities and duties
Duties of the cook include but not limited to:
- To prepare and serve lunch and afternoon tea with the assistance of the kitchen assistant
- To provide staff meals at no extra cost to staff members
- To provide an alternative meal for an individual resident if requested to do so. However, any changes to the published menu must be discussed and agreed with the Home Manager in advance.
- To maintain an inventory of all kitchen equipment, crockery, glassware and cutlery. To report any item of equipment that is faulty immediately and to inform the Home Manager if tableware needs replacing.
- To ensure that Nutrition & Hydration Notifications are held in the kitchen for each resident in the home, that they are up to date and reviewed with the resident as their needs change.
- To plan and prepare food and drink for residents with special dietary requirements or modified diets in line the Nutrition & Hydration Policy.
- To undertake daily kitchen cleaning ensuring that kitchens are cleaned in accordance with kitchen cleaning schedules. This includes the cleaning of cooker and preparation areas.
- To undertake daily kitchen audit of to ensure that the kitchen is compliant with current legislation and regulations and that the food prepared meets the standards outlined in the Nutrition & Hydration Policy.
- Update the kitchen folder with daily temperature checks of both firdges and freezer and food storage checks, following up on any discrepancies.
- To attend staff meetings and read and adhere to any relevant policy and procedures or staff memos issued by your Home Manager or Deputy Manager.
- To ensure both the cook and any kitchen assistants (where applicable) take reasonable care of their own and other people’s health and safety whilst at work.
- To ensure both the cook and any kitchen assistants (where applicable) attend and follow training provided by the organisation to maintain good health and safety standards and are familiar with relevant policies and procedures.
- To ensure that all food and drink that is stored, prepared and served in the home meets the requirements of the Health & Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 and current food hygiene regulations

Qualifications and experience
- Experience desirable but not essential
- Food hygience ceritifcate desirable however not essential as full training will be given
