Sales Assistant
Spofforth Shop is the heart of our village a busy local shop, Post Office, and deli serving the Spofforth community and beyond. We're looking for a friendly, reliable, and proactive Sales Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with the public, take pride in keeping the shop running smoothly, and genuinely care about giving every customer a warm welcome.
This is a paid, customer-facing role, perfect for someone who loves being part of a close-knit community and wants to develop their skills in a fast-paced, varied retail environment. Whether you're serving at the deli counter, helping at the Post Office, or recommending a local product, no two days are quite the same.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers warmly and provide friendly, helpful service that keeps people coming back
- Serve customers at the till, handling cash and card payments accurately
- Help customers with product enquiries and offer recommendations, including our deli and local product ranges
- Serve at the deli counter, preparing, weighing, and presenting fresh products to a high standard
- Assist at the Post Office counter (full training provided no prior experience needed)
- Keep shelves, displays, and counters well stocked, tidy, and looking their best
- Receive and check deliveries, and help with stock rotation to keep everything fresh
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and follow food hygiene and health & safety procedures
- Support promotions and seasonal displays to help showcase our products
- Work as part of the team to keep the shop welcoming, well-run, and busy
Skills & Qualities
- A genuinely friendly, approachable manner and a real enjoyment of working with people
- Good communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility
- Comfortable handling cash and using a till (training provided)
- Able to stay organised and work calmly during busy periods
- Attention to detail and pride in keeping things clean and well presented
- A team player who can also use their initiative and work independently when needed
- Previous retail, deli, or customer service experience is welcome but not essential — a great attitude matters most
