The job role:
Principal HVAC is a well-established, modern and progressive company, delivering professional and efficient air conditioning and ventilation services solutions to clients across the UK and ROI. As part of our continued growth, we are seeking a highly capable Product Designer to join our team in this newly created role.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and technically minded individual to help shape our product development capability and bring new ideas to market. The role requires someone who can combine creativity with practical engineering knowledge, with experience in HVAC systems, fabrication drawings, and a strong understanding of plumbing systems, particularly in relation to heat pump applications and integrated building services.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the full product development lifecycle — from initial concept and prototyping through to design for manufacture and production handover. You will play a key role in designing practical, manufacturable products and components, while ensuring all designs are compliant, efficient, and aligned with business and customer requirements.
To succeed in this role, you will be hands-on, solutions-focused, and confident working both independently and collaboratively. You will be comfortable taking ownership of projects from concept through to completion, with a strong focus on quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead product development projects from concept through to manufacturing and production
- Translate ideas, sketches, and design requirements into functional, manufacturable solutions
- Create 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and detailed fabrication drawings for manufacturing
- Develop, build and test prototypes, refining designs where required
- Design products / components with consideration for manufacturability, cost, quality, and scalability
- Support the design and development of products relating to HVAC, plumbing, heat pump systems, and associated building services applications
- Work with fabricated metal products, assemblies and other structural materials as part of the design process
- Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes to suit product and production requirements
- Collaborate with engineers, suppliers, manufacturers, and internal teams to ensure successful production outcomes
- Conduct testing, validation, troubleshooting, and continuous refinement of designs
- Prepare and maintain all relevant design documentation, specifications, and production information
- Maintain and apply up-to-date knowledge of relevant construction and industry legislation, particularly Building Regulations and key standards including EN 1366, DW144, DW145, and EN 378, ensuring all designs meet compliance and safety requirements
- Ensure good relations and communication with all members of the team, providing excellent customer care in an efficient manner
Skills & Qualifications Required
- Proven experience in a Product Designer, Design Engineer, or similar role
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, components, and applications
- Strong understanding of plumbing systems, particularly in relation to heat pumps and integrated building services
- Proven ability to produce accurate fabrication / manufacturing drawings
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or similar)
- Strong technical design skills, with the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacture
- Experience working with fabricated metal products, sheet metal, mechanical assemblies, or similar construction-related components
- Hands-on prototyping skills and practical problem-solving ability
- Experience working with manufacturers or suppliers
- Knowledge of relevant certification, compliance standards, and product requirements
- Project management experience within product development cycles
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to review, improve, and iterate designs
- Proactive and self-driven, with a strong sense of ownership
- Comfortable working across disciplines (design, engineering, manufacturing, HVAC and plumbing applications)
- Detail-oriented, with a focus on quality, usability and performance
- A positive and confident approach, with strong communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team to meet deadlines
This is a full-time, permanent position, with working hours of Monday to Thursday, 8:00am–5:00pm, and an early finish on Friday at 1:15pm.
