Bhuku Ltd is recruiting two engaging and motivated Life Skills Tutors to join our team delivering a new programme at HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
The role will support Foreign National prisoners to build confidence, develop practical life skills, understand and navigate prison services, and progress towards education, skills, work and other appropriate opportunities.
This is much more than a classroom teaching role. We are looking for people who can build positive professional relationships, engage individuals who may initially be reluctant to participate and provide practical support through workshops, induction, outreach and 1:1 work.
The Role
Each tutor will work 32 paid hours per week, Monday to Thursday. Approximately 22 hours per week will involve structured/timetabled delivery, with the remaining paid time used for learner-facing and supporting activity.
You will:
- Deliver engaging life-skills workshops to small groups of approximately 10–12 learners.
- Contribute to induction sessions for Foreign National prisoners.
- Provide 1:1 support, wing outreach and drop-in engagement.
- Help learners identify their strengths, interests, barriers and realistic next steps.
- Support progression towards education, skills, work and other prison services.
- Help learners understand and navigate relevant prison processes and opportunities.
- Adapt delivery for different communication, literacy, language and learning needs.
- Use accessible, practical and culturally responsive approaches.
- Encourage and re-engage learners who may be reluctant to participate.
- Support and supervise trained Foreign National Peer Representatives.
- Record attendance, learner progress, outcomes and referrals accurately.
- Complete learner evidence, marking and progress records.
- Work collaboratively with prison teams, including Foreign National, OMU and Education, Skills and Work colleagues.
- Contribute to monthly inclusive engagement activities.
- Maintain excellent professional boundaries, safeguarding and prison-security standards.
Who We Are Looking For
We welcome applications from people with backgrounds in teaching, tutoring, adult education, coaching, mentoring, employability, prison education, rehabilitation, youth/adult support, community work or similar roles.
You should be:
- confident working with adults from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds;
- able to engage people with complex or multiple barriers;
- an effective communicator;
- patient, adaptable and non-judgemental;
- comfortable delivering both group sessions and 1:1 support;
- confident maintaining accurate learner records;
- able to work independently while contributing to a wider team;
- able to maintain clear professional boundaries;
- committed to equality, inclusion and culturally responsive practice.
Experience working within a prison, custodial, education, rehabilitation or similar environment would be particularly valuable.
Experience supporting Foreign Nationals, people who speak English as an additional language, or individuals with diverse/complex needs would also be advantageous.
Additional languages are welcomed but are not essential.
Security Clearance
These roles are based inside HMP Wormwood Scrubs and appointment will therefore be subject to the required prison security and vetting processes.
Successful applicants must be willing and able to complete all required checks and comply fully with HMPPS security, safeguarding and professional-boundary requirements.
