We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Junior Legal Accounts Clerk to join our Accounts Team in Chester. This is an entry-level opportunity designed for someone looking to build a career in legal finance. You will work closely alongside an experienced Legal Accounts Clerk who will provide day-to-day guidance, mentorship, and on-the-job training. Working within a busy law firm environment, you will gain hands-on experience in legal accounts, developing your understanding of how client and office transactions are handled in strict accordance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules. No prior legal experience is required — we’re looking for someone with a keen eye for detail, a willingness to learn, and a professional attitude.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Client & Office Account Management
– Assist in maintaining accurate client and office ledgers in line with SRA requirements, under the supervision of your senior colleague
– Support the processing of financial transactions including receipts, payments, transfers, and disbursements, learning correct procedures throughout
– Assist with daily bank reconciliations and learn to monitor cash flow under guidance
– Learn to process and manage CHAPS, BACS, and international payments with support from your senior colleague
– Develop your understanding of SRA Accounts Rules and anti-money laundering (AML) regulations as part of your on-the-job training
Financial Reporting & Compliance
– Assist with the preparation of VAT returns and support internal and external audit processes
– Help to compile daily, weekly, and monthly financial reports for management, gaining experience in financial data presentation
– Assist with year-end accounts and, in time, liaise with external auditors under the direction of your senior colleague
– Learn to identify and escalate any discrepancies or irregularities in financial transactions to your supervisor
Administrative & Support Duties
– Assist in raising and processing invoices, ensuring timely payment and accurate record-keeping
– Liaise with solicitors, clients, banks, and other parties as required, always under appropriate guidance
– Support payroll processing and petty cash management where needed
– Complete file closures in accordance with current firm procedures
– Uphold strict confidentiality and data protection standards at all times
