The Parish Church of St James and Ashurst Primary School have been intrinsically related since the school’s foundation in 1873, and there has been a living and vital relationship ever since. Fr Mark Heather is Rector of Ashurst (as well as Vicar of Steyning) and is the main point of contact between church and school. He alongside others, including the Priest of West Grinstead regularly deliver collective worship to the school community.
The village of Ashurst lies within the Conservation Area and is close to the South Downs. It is a small village with a thriving community with a 12th century parish church dedicated to St James, a much used and loved village hall, the well-known Fountain Inn pub, along with a recreation ground used by Ashurst Primary, as well as the local community.

Salary: £24,796 - £25,185 FTE; pro rata to 32.5 hours per week
Contract Type: Term time only plus Inset Days
Working Pattern: 8.30am to 3.30pm five days a week

Job Purpose
To work one to one with a named child who requires additional support with their learning, behaviour and wellbeing, enabling them to access the curriculum within the classroom environment.
To work professionally and effectively within the context of this small rural village school, meeting the inclusive needs of pupils and staff, including those in the school office and in the teaching/learning environment.
What You Need to Succeed
To be successful in this role you will need to:
- Have experience working with children with additional or special educational needs such as ADHD, autism, SEMH.
- Uphold the vision, character and policies of the school.
- Manage behaviour across the school effectively to ensure a safe and secure learning environment.
- Be patient and understanding, and able to adapt and respond to a range of different situations and circumstances in an appropriate manner.
- Be suitably qualified for the post of Teaching Assistant e.g. GCSE Maths and English, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent.
- Work well as part of a team.
- Be enthusiastic, motivated and caring.
Responsibilities
- Work one to one with a named child who requires additional support with their learning, behaviour and wellbeing, enabling them to access the curriculum within the classroom environment.
- Work closely with the class teacher and SENDCo to monitor and report progress, implement individual learning and support plans, and to promote positive behaviour.
- Manage and supervise individuals and small groups of pupils throughout the day, including in the classroom, playground, field, dining areas and in various educational activities, under the direction of a class teacher or senior member of staff.
- Provide learning activities for individuals and small groups of pupils, under the professional direction and supervision of a teacher, differentiating and adapting learning to meet the needs of individual pupils.
- Monitor pupils’ conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene as appropriate using agreed policies and procedures, and report directly to a senior member of staff.
- Establish and maintain positive professional relationships with families/carers and other professionals.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of high-quality enabling environments across the school.
- Under the direction of staff, administer medication in accordance with school policy.
- Attend various meetings as appropriate.
- Attend staff training days as appropriate.
- To be aware of and comply with all policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the appropriate person.
- Engage proactively with professional development.
