SparkEd Recruitment is working in partnership with a range of welcoming specialist schools, mainstream primary schools, and secondary schools with dedicated SEND provisions across Devon. We are looking for compassionate, resilient, and dedicated SEND Learning Mentors to join our temporary and daily supply teams from September 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity to work across a variety of educational settings, supporting pupils across Key Stages 1–4 and gaining valuable experience while making a genuine difference to their educational and personal development.
As a SEND Learning Mentor, you'll provide targeted support to pupils who may need additional guidance with their learning, confidence, behaviour, emotional wellbeing, communication, or social development. You'll build positive relationships, encourage independence, and help pupils recognise and achieve their potential.
The Role
Working alongside teachers, SENDCOs, pastoral teams, therapists, and other education professionals, your responsibilities may include:
- Providing one-to-one and small-group mentoring tailored to individual needs.
- Supporting pupils with their academic, social, emotional, and personal development.
- Building positive, trusting relationships that encourage confidence, engagement, and resilience.
- Helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and develop positive attitudes towards education.
- Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, self-esteem, confidence, and behaviour.
- Encouraging positive behaviour through consistent and supportive approaches.
- Supporting personalised learning, intervention, and support plans.
- Helping pupils develop independence, communication, social skills, and effective learning strategies.
- Encouraging pupils to recognise their strengths and celebrate their progress.
- Creating a safe, inclusive, positive, and engaging environment where every pupil feels valued and supported.
Who You'll Be Supporting
Depending on the school and setting, you may work with children and young people with a range of additional needs, including:
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
- ADHD.
- Anxiety.
- Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
- Emotional regulation difficulties.
- Behavioural challenges.
- Low confidence and self-esteem.
- Communication and social interaction difficulties.
- Additional learning needs.
About You
Previous experience as a Learning Mentor isn't essential. We're looking for people with the right attitude, transferable skills, and genuine passion for helping children and young people.
You may have experience in:
- Childcare or youth work.
- Health and social care.
- Residential childcare or support work.
- Behaviour or learning mentoring.
- Coaching or mentoring.
- Supporting children or adults with SEND.
- Mental health or wellbeing services.
- Pastoral or community support.
We also welcome applications from graduates in Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Criminology, Sociology, Health & Social Care, or related subjects who are looking to begin or develop their career within education.
