About the Gregson
The Gregson Community and Arts Centre is a community owned, community led charity with over 130 years of history at the heart of Lancaster. Established in 1889 as a community asset, our mission today is for people to be in the driving seat of their community events and cultural experiences.
The Gregson is home to a vibrant programme of arts, entertainment and community activity. Every year we host more than 3,500 events, from community groups and workshops to theatre, live music, cinema, festivals and private parties.
Our award-winning Café Bar is the charity's principal source of earned income and an important community space in its own right. We are looking for a friendly, organised and enthusiastic Cafe Bar Supervisor to join our friendly team and ensure every visitor receives a warm welcome.
About the Role
As a Cafe Bar Supervisor, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of our Café Bar and wider building. You will often be the first person our visitors meet and will help create the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that The Gregson is known for.
Working closely with the Cafe Bar Manager and Deputy Manager, you will supervise shifts, support staff and volunteers, maintain excellent customer service standards and help ensure the smooth running of the building during busy events and quieter community sessions alike.
This is a varied role. One evening you may be supervising a relaxed community gathering, while the next you could be helping manage one of Lancaster's busiest festival venues. We are looking for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, takes pride in maintaining high standards and is happy to work as part of a team where everyone supports one another.
Key Responsibilities
Shift Supervision
In the absence of the Cafe Bar Manager or Deputy Manager, you will act as the senior member of staff on duty and will:
● Supervise Café Bar staff and volunteers throughout your shift.
● Allocate duties and support the team to deliver excellent customer service.
● Act as the main point of contact for operational issues during your shift.
● Support and motivate staff to maximise sales through excellent service and appropriate upselling.
● Ensure licensing, food hygiene and health and safety procedures are followed.
● Manage customer behaviour professionally and confidently, resolving issues where appropriate and
escalating concerns when necessary.
● Complete end-of-shift procedures, including cashing up, stock security and closing the building.
Customer Service
You will:
● Provide a warm, friendly and inclusive welcome to every visitor.
● Serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks responsibly.
● Take food and drink orders and work closely with our kitchen partner to ensure efficient service.
● Check identification in accordance with Challenge 25 and licensing legislation.
● Respond professionally to customer enquiries and complaints.
● Help create a welcoming atmosphere that reflects The Gregson's values.
Café Bar Operations
You will:
● Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the Café Bar.
● Keep front-of-house areas clean, organised and welcoming.
● Restock bar supplies and monitor stock levels during shifts.
● Support cellar management and stock rotation.
● Carry out regular cleaning and deep cleaning during quieter trading periods.
● Ensure all equipment is maintained and any faults are reported promptly.
Supporting the Wider Building
As part of a small team, everyone contributes to the successful running of the whole centre. You will:
● Welcome visitors and direct them to activities taking place across the building.
● Support the smooth operation of community events, performances and private hires.
● Assist with room set-up and close-down when required.
● Ensure communal areas and event spaces are left clean, safe and ready for the next day's activities.
General Responsibilities
You will:
● Work collaboratively with colleagues and volunteers across the organisation.
● Attend paid staff meetings and training sessions.
● Follow all Gregson policies and procedures.
● Promote a positive, inclusive and respectful working environment.
● Undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the role.
