We are seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to take a Design Lead role within JBA-Bentley, delivering complex Design & Build projects across flood risk management, infrastructure and environmental sectors. This role combines deep geotechnical technical expertise with design leadership, governance and technical accountability, supporting the successful delivery of multidisciplinary schemes from options appraisal through to construction. The role:
Candidates should have experience of working in consultancy in the UK and should also be able to demonstrate experience of project or task management, achieving programme, controlling budgets and delivering work to the required quality standards.
JBA Consulting is a client-focused organisation. Excellent technical report writing and effective communication skills are therefore essential to this role. Candidates should have a sound appreciation for engineering principles and good analytical skills.
You will be a motivated and experienced geotechnical professional who can demonstrate significant post-graduate experience in UK consultancy, ideally including Design & Build delivery and has proven experience in project management, including programme, budget and quality control.
The ideal applicant will also be able to demonstrate confidence in leading design teams and engaging with clients, contractors and stakeholders, and a passion for delivering resilient, sustainable and buildable infrastructure solutions.
This role will preferably be Leeds based with regular collaboration and travel as required across UK offices (including Edinburgh, Newcastle & Peterborough) and to site for Design & Build projects.
As a Principal Geotechnical Engineer and Design Lead, you will:
· Provide technical leadership and act as Design Lead / Design Authority on JBA-Bentley Design & Build projects.
· Lead the geotechnical design of temporary and permanent works in fluvial, coastal and complex ground conditions.
· Take responsibility for design governance, technical assurance and compliance with relevant standards.
· Coordinate and integrate geotechnical design within multi-disciplinary teams, working closely with civil, structural and environmental engineers.
· Support projects through options appraisal, concept design, detailed design and construction.
· Champion Safety in Design and fulfil Designer responsibilities under CDM Regulations.
· Mentor, supervise and develop junior engineers and, depending on experience, undertake line management responsibilities.
· Contribute to bids, tenders and business development, supporting the strategic objectives of JBA Consulting and JBA Bentley
· Promote innovation in design, buildability, carbon reduction, sustainability, digital delivery and efficiency.
· Building relationships with clients and the wider JBA business.
Your technical leadership will typically include:
· Design, specification and management of ground investigations
· Geotechnical design in very poor ground conditions (e.g. alluvium, tidal flats, made ground)
· Earthworks design and specification
· Slope stability and embankment assessments
· Sheet pile wall and retaining structure design
· Foundation and pile design
· Application of current UK geotechnical and structural design standards.
Candidates should have:
· A degree, or equivalent, in Civil Engineering, Geology or Engineering Geology (geotechnical MSc/MEng desirable)
· Chartered status with a relevant professional body (ICE or Geological Society)
· A full UK driving licence.
