Role Description
Arcadis is seeking experienced Assistant Driller to join our field services team at our operating base in Brockworth, Gloucester. You will support ground investigation projects throughout the UK across infrastructure, manufacturing, petrochemical and construction environments.
Working alongside a Lead Driller in a two- or three-person crew, you will help operate multipurpose and window-sampling rigs and support delivery in coordination with Arcadis consultants and other site personnel.
This is a practical, site-based role involving outdoor work in varied weather conditions, manual handling and the safe use of drilling equipment. You must be able to undertake the essential duties of the role safely. Travel throughout the UK is required, with regular overnight stays near project sites, normally from Monday to Friday. Weekend or night working may occasionally be required, depending on project needs, with applicable arrangements confirmed in advance.
When site work is not available, daily attendance at the Brockworth depot may be required; you should therefore be able to commute to the Gloucester area. Arcadis will arrange suitable single-occupancy accommodation for approved overnight stays and provide subsistence in line with applicable company arrangements when working away from your appointed office location.
Key Accountabilities
- Assist with mobilisation, site set-up, safe operation and demobilisation of drilling rigs and associated equipment.
- Undertake tool handling, sampling support, monitoring-installation activities, basic records and other duties directed by the Lead Driller.
- Follow applicable legislation, client requirements, Arcadis procedures and relevant British Drilling Association guidance.
- Complete pre-use checks, routine maintenance and housekeeping, and promptly report defects, damage, incidents and unsafe conditions.
- Maintain high standards of health, safety and environmental performance, including correct use of personal protective equipment and pollution-prevention controls.
- Work collaboratively with consultants, subcontractors, clients and other site personnel.
- Support the development of less-experienced Assistant Drillers where competent and authorised to do so.
Qualifications and Experience
- A valid Category B driving licence held for at least 12 months, with a driving record acceptable for the duties and applicable company insurance requirements.
- Demonstrable experience supporting drilling or comparable field operations, including safe equipment handling and site working.
- Ability to travel throughout the UK and stay away from home during the working week.
- Basic digital skills for completing records, communicating with the team and using standard business applications.
- A practical, safety-focused approach and the ability to work effectively as part of a field crew.
Desirable Criteria
- A relevant Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), such as Drilling Operations – Assistant Driller or window sampling.
- Category C1+E or Category C driving entitlement.
- Relevant site competencies, such as a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, Safety Pass Alliance/UK Petroleum Industry Association (SPA/UKPIA) passport, Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification or telehandler qualification.
Where appropriate, Arcadis will support the successful candidate with role-related training and development, including relevant NVQ qualifications and required site competencies.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- Overtime and bonus arrangements, subject to the applicable scheme rules.
- 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing with service, with the option to purchase additional leave.
- Single-occupancy accommodation for approved overnight stays and subsistence in line with company arrangements.
- External and internal learning and development opportunities.
- A contributory pension, with employer matching up to 8%, subject to eligibility and scheme rules.
- Access to a broader flexible benefits package, which may include private medical and dental cover, a cycle-to-work scheme and gym membership, subject to eligibility and the options available for the role.
