Benedex is a robotics and automation engineering company based in Bristol. We design and build high-performance servo drives, integrated motor systems and robot controllers - both as original Benedex products and as custom engineering solutions developed with and for our customers.
Our work spans mobile robotics, building precision motion systems and control hardware for automation. The projects are technically demanding and genuinely varied - one week you might be laying out the power stage of a hardened motor drive; the next, bringing up a compute board bound for a next-generation controller.

The Role
Day to day, you’ll own the hardware lifecycle, designing schematic diagrams and multi-layer PCB layouts in KiCad, developing robust power designs (DC-DC converters, motor control) and reliable digital designs (microcontrollers, high-speed interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, USB and Ethernet), then building, testing and troubleshooting the boards yourself and preparing them for the assembly line. You aren’t just sitting behind a screen drawing schematics; you’ll spin up prototypes, bring them up on the bench, and debug with a scope and a soldering iron in hand.
You’ll have the unique opportunity to take your prototypes out of the lab and test them directly in their real-world operating environments alongside our customers — seeing exactly how your designs perform in the field, getting direct feedback, and iterating fast. You’ll work shoulder-to-shoulder with our other engineers so that electrical, software and mechanical decisions get made together, and you’ll apply DFM and DFA principles so your designs can be reliably mass-produced.
The work is hands-on. We design on screen and then we build it, test it, and iterate. If you’re equally at home at an EDA workstation and on a workbench, you’ll fit right in.
What We're Looking For
We’re looking for an engineer who REALLY UNDERSTANDS HARDWARE - someone with a natural curiosity to understand why a circuit behaves the way it does, and the methodical instinct to chase a problem down to root cause. And of course, someone who wants to contribute and innovate, not just execute: picks up a problem, owns it, and drives it to a solution without waiting to be hand-held. We want a genuinely talented engineer who reads around problems, picks up new domains quickly, and brings ideas to the table rather than waiting to be pointed at them.
You should have
– KiCad (or similar): experience using it for schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout
– Core engineering knowledge: a solid theoretical understanding of both analog/power electronics and digital circuit design
– Hands-on lab skills: comfort with (or a strong desire to learn) fine-pitch soldering, rework, and diagnostic tools - oscilloscopes, multimeters and bench power supplies
– Embedded software: experience writing and debugging firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers, and comfort working across the hardware/firmware boundary (a supporting part of the role alongside your hardware work - or a strong appetite to develop it if you’re light here)
– The troubleshooting mindset: a methodical approach to bring-up, debugging and root-cause analysis, and the habit of documenting findings to improve future revisions
– Design for manufacture: a working understanding of DFM and DFA, and the confidence to liaise with manufacturing partners and resolve production queries
– A relevant degree and real hardware on your CV: a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or equivalent practical, demonstrable experience) - boards or systems you designed and saw built
– Self-management: the ability to manage your own work and time responsibly, to a high standard, and see your projects through to the end
– Communication: the skills to work effectively with both the team and customers
– English: full professional fluency, spoken and written
