Senior Engineer
ABOUT US
HausBots designs and manufactures advanced robotics systems for the inspection and maintenance of critical infrastructure, including offshore platforms, storage tanks, and steel structures operating in some of the harshest environments in the world.
We are a VC-backed scale-up based in Stirchley, Birmingham, roughly a year and a half into a soft launch of our flagship product with customers, building the knowledge, use cases, and confidence needed to move into full-scale distribution. Our team is small and deliberately lean, which means every engineer here has real influence over what gets built and how well it performs in the field.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a Senior Engineer to take ownership of project delivery within our engineering team. We operate more like a fast-moving consultancy than a conventional product company: we design, we prototype quickly, we test in the real world, and we iterate hard rather than perfecting everything on screen before we build. This role exists to bring order and momentum to that process. You will take ownership of individual projects end to end, manage timelines, and make sure work that starts gets finished, rather than drifting onto the backburner while the next urgent job takes over.
You will report to our Head of Engineering, who is strong technically and a generous mentor once trust is established, but who needs a delivery-focused second-in-command to help the wider team perform to schedule.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Ownership & Delivery
You will take direct ownership of engineering projects from brief through to delivery, managing timelines, resourcing, and scope with a bias towards action. Where a brief needs revising in light of new findings, you will make that call and communicate it clearly rather than letting a project stall waiting for direction. You are expected to clear a live backlog of projects, some of which have been delayed by earlier resourcing gaps, and to establish a cadence where new work does not simply pile on top of old work left unfinished.
Hands-On Design, Build & Test
You will work in a genuinely iterative way: design, prototype, test, and refine, rather than spending extended periods behind a screen refining a design in isolation. You will bring mechatronics fundamentals to bear on problems that cross the boundary between mechanical design and electronics, and you will be comfortable picking up new systems and technologies quickly, asking the right questions of the people around you rather than waiting to be briefed in full.
Team Mentoring & Capability Building
You will work closely with our junior engineers, helping to build both their technical capability and their discipline around documentation, reasoning, and process. This includes practical guidance on closing out their existing projects, as well as longer-term coaching on the habits that make engineering work traceable and repeatable. You will also work alongside our technicians, helping resolve the practical blockers that slow builds and tests down.
Cross-Discipline Collaboration
You will work closely with our Head of Engineering and our electronics specialist, integrating quickly into the design team and contributing ideas that push projects forward rather than waiting to be told what to do. You are expected to gather the information you need proactively, know who to ask and what to ask, and translate technical understanding into forward progress at pace.
Your work will be visible and consequential from day one.
WHAT WE NEED
Essential
● Minimum 7 years of engineering experience, ideally with a mechatronics background bridging mechanical and electronics disciplines
● Solid understanding of engineering and electronics fundamentals; comfortable working across both domains
● Genuine hands-on experience: design, build, test, iterate, rather than screen-based design work alone
● Track record of owning project delivery and managing timelines in a fast-paced, consultancy-style, or similarly high-tempo environment
● Strong communication skills, with the ability to gather information proactively and integrate quickly into a small team
Desirable
● Experience mentoring or informally leading junior engineers
● Background in robotics, harsh-environment hardware, or critical infrastructure equipment
● Experience with production handoff, BOM ownership, or change control processes
This role is based on-site at our Stirchley, Birmingham workshop. Given the hands-on, fast-iteration nature of the work, this is not a remote or hybrid position.
REPORTING & TEAM
You will report directly to our Head of Engineering, who takes a hands-off approach once trust is established and is looking for someone who can manage their own time and take genuine ownership of delivery. You will work day to day alongside our junior engineers and technicians, and collaborate closely with our electronics specialist.

INTERVIEW PROCESS
1. Introductory Conversation
A brief conversation with the team to understand your background, your experience owning delivery, and what draws you to HausBots. We are gauging communication style and pace as much as content.
2. Technical Test
A mechatronics-based technical test, completed remotely, designed to challenge you across the range of abilities the role needs: mechanical reasoning, electronics fundamentals, and practical problem-solving under realistic constraints.
3. Face-to-Face Interview
An in-person panel interview with our Head of Engineering and leadership, held at our Stirchley workshop.
Expect to be asked how you'd approach owning a live project, how you handle shifting priorities, and how you'd work with our existing engineers. Where useful, a short secondary meeting on the same day with a member of the engineering team may be arranged to assess team fit.
Throughout the process, we are thinking about: Can you own,delivery and manage timelines under pressure?
Do you have the hands-on instincts to design, build, and test rather than staying behind a screen? Will you mesh with a small, fast-moving team, and can you mentor junior engineers while getting your own work done?
Pay: £45,000.00-£50,000.00 per year
