Are you passionate about helping young people develop the life skills and independence they need for life beyond school?
We are recruiting a Learning Mentor to support children and young people with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Complex Needs and PMLD in a specialist education setting. This role is ideal for individuals who are motivated by preparing pupils for adult life, independence, communication and functional skills, rather than purely academic outcomes.
Class sizes are small (no more than 12 students per class), allowing you to build strong relationships and provide highly personalised support.
The Role
As a Learning Mentor, you will play a key role in helping pupils develop essential skills for life after school, working closely with teachers, therapists and support staff.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group mentoring focused on life skills and independence
- Supporting pupils with daily living skills, routines and personal development
- Encouraging communication, social interaction and emotional regulation
- Supporting pupils with sensory, physical and complex needs
- Assisting with personal care where required, including hygiene, feeding and mobility
- Promoting confidence, self-awareness and decision-making
- Building positive, trusting relationships that support long-term progress
This is a meaningful role where progress is measured in independence, confidence and life readiness.
Why Become a Learning Mentor?
- Make a long-lasting impact on pupils’ lives beyond education
- Focus on real-world skills such as independence, communication and social development
- Consistent daytime hours in a structured, supportive setting
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary team supporting holistic outcomes
- Clear temp-to-perm pathway after 12 weeks
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in mentoring, care, support work, youth work, health & social care or similar
- A strong interest in life skills, independence and preparation for adulthood
- Confidence supporting young people with SLD, complex needs or PMLD
- Lived or informal SEN experience is also welcomed
- A calm, patient and motivational approach
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Full-time availability (8:30am–3:30pm, Monday–Friday)
- Full right to work in the UK (essential – no sponsorship available)
No previous school-based experience is required — transferable skills and the right mindset are key.
