Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled, friendly and enthusiastic Barista/Shop Assistant to join our team to cover maternity leave. The ideal candidate will have proven barista experience, passion for customer service & good food, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently. You will be responsible for preparing drinks, handling food, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting with general shop duties. The Welsh General Store focuses on Welsh first non ultra processed food and drink and has a coffee shop that seats 16.
Key Responsibilities
Beverage Preparation: Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including speciality coffees, adhering to standardised recipes and presentation guidelines.
Customer Service: Greet customers warmly, take orders, and provide product information and recommendations to enhance the customer experience.
Food Handling: Prepare, heat, and serve food items such as sandwiches, pastries, and salads, ensuring compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
Cash Handling: Operate the cash register, process payments accurately, and handle cash and card transactions securely.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in all areas of the shop, including dining areas, counters, equipment, and bathroom.
Stock Management: Monitor inventory levels, restock shelves and displays, and assist in receiving and organising deliveries.
Health and Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health and safety regulations, report any hazards or incidents, and ensure a safe environment for staff and customers.
Team Collaboration: Ability to work alone but also happy to work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure efficient shop operations and a positive work atmosphere.
Opening and Closing: Ensure the shop is prepared for operation at the start of the day and secured at closing, following all opening and closing procedures.
Requirements
Experience: Previous experience in a barista role is essential as well as the ability to create latte art.
Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and multitask in a busy environment.
- Proficiency in operating point-of-sale systems and handling cash transactions.
- Knowledge of coffee preparation and food handling is a necessity.
Personal Attributes: Reliable, punctual, proactive, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Certifications: Possession of a valid Basic Food Hygiene Certificate is desirable.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) principles.
- Awareness of food allergens and protocols for preventing cross-contamination.
- Familiarity with COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations.
Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods and perform tasks that involve lifting and bending.
