About us
Ace Scaffolding Contractors is an established Sussex-based scaffolding contractor delivering domestic and commercial projects across Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. We're investing in our people, systems and financial controls as we grow, and we're bringing our bookkeeping in-house to get closer, real-time control of our numbers.
The role
We're looking for an experienced bookkeeper to run the day-to-day finance function from our office, three days a week. You'll own the books end to end on Xero — purchase and sales ledgers, CIS, VAT, credit control, bank reconciliation and reporting — working directly with the directors and liaising with our accountant at year-end. Construction experience, and CIS in particular, is essential.
This is a hands-on role for someone organised and reliable who can keep our finances accurate, up to date and under control.
What you'll be doing
- Maintain the day-to-day bookkeeping on Xero, keeping ledgers accurate and reconciled
- Process supplier invoices, reconcile statements and manage the payment run (including supplier payment plans)
- Raise sales invoices and applications for payment, and keep the sales ledger up to date
- Run credit control — chase outstanding invoices and keep debtor days down
- Operate CIS — verify subcontractors, apply deductions, file monthly CIS returns and EPS for CIS suffered
- Prepare and submit VAT returns, including the construction domestic reverse charge
- Support payroll / PAYE processing and reconciliation
- Complete regular bank reconciliations
- Produce cashflow and management figures for the directors
- Liaise with our external accountant at year-end and keep records audit-ready
What we're looking for
- Proven bookkeeping experience, ideally in construction or a trade business
- Strong working knowledge of CIS (returns, deductions, subcontractor verification, EPS)
- Solid understanding of VAT, including the construction reverse charge
- Confident and experienced on Xero
- Well organised, accurate and able to work independently
- Good communicator, comfortable chasing payments and dealing with suppliers
- AAT qualified (or qualified by experience)
Desirable: payroll experience, experience bringing bookkeeping in-house, and knowledge of Monday.com.
