The group includes Blackpool Skip Hire & MJ TEALE Recycled Sand & Aggregates. We are located at Kingscourt Recycling Centre, FY6 8JE. Blackpool Skip Hire holds ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 accreditations and was named 2025 Wyre Business of the Year. We're a hands-on business that invests in modern kit and looks after people who look after us.
The role
We're recruiting a HGV Technician to service and maintain the group's fleet of up to 30 waste-carrying vehicles, plus support vans. The fleet includes:
- Chain lift skip loader HGVs
- RORO hookloader HGVs
- HGV tippers
- Smaller service and support vans
Day-to-day, you'll be responsible for:
- Undertaking PMI 6-weekly inspections and appropriate repair work, in line with DVSA and O-licence requirements
- Scheduled servicing across the fleet
- Fault diagnosis using diagnostic equipment, and carrying out repairs on engines, brakes, air systems, hydraulics, electrics and ancillary body equipment (chain lift gear, hooklift rams, tipping gear)
- MOT preparation and presentation
- Conducting rolling road brake tests onsite
- Defect rectification from daily driver walkaround reports & adhoc defects experienced during daily operations.
- Liaising with drivers and the wider team on a daily basis — teamwork matters here.
- Accurate completion of inspection sheets, service records and defect reports
- Keeping the workshop clean, organised and safe — good housekeeping is non-negotiable here
Who we're looking for
The right person matters more to us than a perfect CV. We want someone with integrity, a strict eye for detail, and a genuine willingness to crack on. Specifically:
- Time-served HGV technician or equivalent proven experience on commercial vehicles
- Confident with modern diagnostic equipment
- Understands DVSA maintenance standards and the importance of compliance on an operator's licence
- Able to work under pressure, independently and proactively
- A flexible approach to suit the needs of the business
- Takes pride in their workmanship and their workspace
- Reliable, self-motivated and honest — you'll often be trusted to manage your own workload
Essential:
- HGV licence — useful for road testing and MOT presentation
Preferred (not essential):
- Experience with waste industry bodywork (skip loaders, hookloaders, tippers)
- IRTEC accreditation or equivalent
What you'll get
- Pay based on competence and merit, reviewed against performance
- Overtime at enhanced rate
- Company pension scheme
- 20 days' holiday plus bank holidays
- All tools you need are purchased by the company (remaining company property) — you're also welcome to bring your own
- Free onsite parking
- Stable, long-established family business with a full order book and a modern, growing fleet
- Genuine variety — no two days the same across skips, RORO, tippers and van support
